Advantages: Interesting, original, experimental, something different. Disadvantages: Non-specific genre means it's not marketed well.
Ratatat aren't very well known here in the UK. Even when they played in London, the venue was small and exclusive and it was obvious from the reaction of the crowd that these were not just folk 'trying them out'. These were proper fans. Fans who weren't anxious about being disappointed, because they knew they wouldn't be.
Ratatat consists of Mike Stroud and Evan Mast, and LP3 was created in a derelict old house in New York, chock full of extraordinary instruments that were used to full advantage.
LP3 has been reviewed over and over again as perfect 'advert' or 'opening sequence' music. And whereas I can appreciate that many of the tracks could be used to aid all manner of inspiring scenes or purchases, the album on a whole has a lot more depth to it than that.
Ratatat have progressed and matured slowly into less use of their guitars ...
