~~~A little on Ronaldo~~~
Ronaldo was born on the island of Madeira of Portuguese nationality and his middle name "Ronaldo" was named after the US president Ronald Reagan. His mother is called Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro and his father is called José Dinis Aveiro. He is the youngest child and has an older brother, hugo and two older sisters, Elma and Katia.
Ronaldo currently lives in a two million house In Woodford in Chesire with his brother and two sisters.
Ronaldo was very close to his father but unfortunately his father died on 7th September 2005. However he played in the world cup qualifier match against Russia a few hours after receiving the news. Sir Alex Ferguson allowed his to take compassionate leave and he missed the Manchester Derby however he said he was available for the match after. For me this shows how compassionate he is and what great dedication he has.
Ronaldo prefers to keep his personal life private and is currently to my knowledge not going out with anyone. He has dated several women including footballer's sister: Jordana Jardel, model: Lauren Frain and Christina Carlos.
Ronaldo has also done some charity work. This includes inviting an 11-year old survivor from the Indonesian tsunami and his father to the World Cup qualifiers and paying for all their expenses and helped buy them a house in Indonesia. He flew out to Indonesia himself and auctioned off his personal sports gear to raise money for the survivors of the tsunami.
~~~Career~~~
Ronaldo started playing football at the young age of three and supported the team SL Benfica. At the age of eight he started to play for Andorinha which is an amateur team. However at the age of 10 the two big Portugal teams were interested in him and he signed up with CD Nacional. Here he was very successful and at the age of just 14 Sporting Lisbon signed him up after a three day trial. He played for Portugal UEFA U17 Championships where he was very successful and it was here the rest of the world started to look at him.
At the age of 16 Liverpool would not sign him since Gérard Houllier thought he was too young. However in 2003 Manchester United met and were beaten 3-1 by Sporting Lisbon. Sir Alex Ferguson was very interested in Ronaldo and after the match spoke to him. In 2003 David Beckham went to Real Madrid and Manchester United needed a new winger and Ronaldo was signed for Ł12.24 million. Ronaldo is now playing his fifth season at Manchester United.
~~~Career at Manchester United~~~
Rondalo's first moment of fame was when he was subbed on in the 60th minute against Bolton with the score 0-0. He soon made it 1-0 and then won a penalty for Manchester United which Ruud van Nistelrooy took and missed. However they eventually won 4-0 and suddenly the English press realised the talent of the young boy.
Ronaldo did not want the shirt number 7 and originally asked for 28 which was the number he wore before joining Man U but ended up with 7.
After the world cup incident (which I have mentioned later) Ronaldo still seemed popular with the fans as he scored and played well in the match against Fulham. The fans could be heard shouting "there's only one Ronaldo".
The first half of the 2006/07 season has been very successful for Ronaldo and he has become one of if not the most influential player playing for Manchester United. He scored 6 goals in three games bringing his league games goals up to 12, the highest scorer for Man U in the Premiership even though he plays on the wing rather than upfront. He is the second highest scorer in the Premiership only second to Drogba who has one more goal however he plays upfront.
The match on Boxing Day proves how influential Ronaldo is when Man U was drawing 0-0 with Wigan until Ronaldo was bought on at half time. Within two minutes of the game he got his first touch on the ball and headed the ball into the goal. Four minutes another goal was to follow before he performed a superb cross straight to Solskjaer who scored. Unfortunately Wigan scored on the 90th minute from a penalty however Ronaldo's contribution was undoubtedly brilliant.
Ronaldo also seems to have controlled his temper last season he has received 1 yellow card which is good compared to some of his fellow team mates.
Up to date Ronaldo has appeared for Manchester United 214 times.
~~~International~~~
Ronaldo played for his country at younger ages and appeared in Portugal's U17 and U21 teams. However he started playing internationally in 2003 for Portugal. He has played at an international level 52 times and has scored 16 times. He scored the first World Cup goal in a match against Iran.
~~~World Cup Incident~~~
A lot of England's hatred for Ronaldo arose from the World Cup incident when England played Portugal on the 1st July. If anyone can't remember which I doubt slightly, there was speculation that Ronaldo persuaded the referee to send of Rooney after Rooney stamped on one of the Portugal players. The referee however Denied that Ronaldo had any influence and sent Rooney off for his behavior. Personally I think Rooney would have been sent off anyway even if Ronaldo did say something. However apart from Ronaldo and the referee no-one knows what was said. Ronaldo himself did not think he should return to Manchester United as he did not want to work and live somewhere where people hate him.
Sir Alex Ferguson asked his assistant did not want Ronaldo to leave and along with Rooney who also pleaded with Ronaldo to stay they managed to persuade him. Ronaldo and Rooney since have got on fine and have been seen many a time having a good time together with no apparent resentment. Both made statements that they got on fine.
The media however continued to attack Ronaldo and blamed him for England not winning the world cup. The fans also made clear how much they hated him in the semi-final France vs. Portugal which many English fans had bought tickets too thinking England would get through. Ronaldo was booed by the English fans every time he got the ball and the French were quick to join in. Ronaldo broke down in tears at the end of the match and up till that point I had been annoyed with him and booing him myself. But he made me realise how passionate he is and generally (although I did not know this at the time) he was considered to be the best player for that match.
However Ronaldo then told the media it is country before club. And it is true no matter who he plays for he will always be Portuguese.
~~~Achievements~~~
He scored Manchester United's 1000th Premiership Goal He was named FIFPro Special Young Player of the Year in 2005 which was voted by the fans. He won Barclays Player of the Month for November 2006 He won Barclays Player of the Month for Decmeber 2006 becoming the third player ever to win it in two consecutive months! Highest scorer for Man U in the 06/07 season and second in the premiership Won Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year last season Fans player of the year 06/07 season Named 3rd best in the World in 2007 by FIFA Runner up in the European Player of the Year 2007 to Kaka. Currently highest scorer for Man U and in the premiership Portuguese Footballer of the Year 2007 Holds the Premiership record for most goals scored in one season by a midfielder, having scored 17 times during the 2006-2007 Premiership campaign~~~Other random facts~~~
His childhood nickname was Kluivert.
His childhood hero was Maradonna.
He appears on the front cover of the Play Station 2 game FIFA Street 2 (I know this because my cousin has it!). Ronaldo is very happy it is him but does not think it looks very much like him.
He supported Sport Lisboa e Benfica but he played for their rival club.
His heroes now are Figo and Henry.
He was teased for his Madeiran accent as he grew up in Lisbon.
~~~Diving~~~
Ronaldo has been accused many a time of diving and I must agree that before this season he did fall over too much. He was criticised a lot for this and quite rightly. However this season he has stayed on his feet much more and many times he was been fouled but has stayed up. In that fact I think now he stays up more than most players in the premiership and he should be congratulated on that. However there is not denying his past of diving, this is where he got his bad reputation of cheating from. However we must understand that his pace is extraordinary and sometimes he loses his balance. In one of the recent matches he lost his balance in the penalty box and did not appeal for a penalty as it was his fault. However the referee gave a penalty, in my opinion that bears no shame or blame on Ronaldo. As Sir Alex Ferguson said, "He is the most fouled player in the Premiership." And looking at his talent I can see why.
~~~My thoughts~~~
I think Ronaldo is a brilliant player and I have to give him a lot of credit especially this half season. We must remember he is only 21, not even his peak. He can in my opinion become the best on the world and if he keeps improving the rate he does he will be fabulous at the age of 25. It's unfortunate that he is not English but he is a brilliant player. His accuracy is improving rapidly with many perfect crosses and free kicks. And as he has shown this season he has a great scoring ability. His pace is one of the best in the world and his skill when he has the ball is almost perfect. He was accused of being very selfish with the ball and I thought so my self. He often lost the ball or tried to take the goal for himself. But this season he has done what is best for Man U rather than being selfish. He is no longer a selfish, diving, cheating idiot. But a truly brilliant and exciting player to watch. He also seems to bring to life the rest of his team. When he comes on he brings the game to life with his constant threats at goal. All I can say is I support him 100% of the way and I think he WILL become one of the best.
~~~Some Ronaldo quotes I found!~~~
"I am very happy to be signing for the best team in the world and especially proud to be the first Portuguese player to join United." "I was saluted by Alex Ferguson when I was subbed and that made me very happy." "I would be very proud if, one day, I'm held in the same esteem as George Best or Beckham. It's what I'm working hard towards." "I'm living a dream I never want to wake up from." "Lots of young players have triumphed at United, so why can't it happen to me? I'm not worried I'm young - it's an incentive to do the best I can." "The No 7 shirt is an honour and a responsibility. I hope it brings me a lot of luck." "I've got a contract with United until 2010, but my future belongs to God." "There have been a few players described as 'The new George Best' over the years, but this is the first time it has been a compliment to me." [George Best]
Thanks very much for reading and please take a look at the pictures.
The information found was from a variety of websites, I don't contain all this knowledge on Ronaldo inside my head! However I have read it many a time in several places. Some of the quotes have been copied from websites however one or two I remembered reading somewhere myself so may not be word for word.
An update for any Ronaldo fans, it has been announced that Ronaldo has won the December 2006 Barclays Premiership Player of the Month Award. He is the third player ever to win this award two months running. The only other players to win the award two months running are Dennis Bergkamp in 1997 and Robbie Fowler in 1996.
~~UPDATE 5/1/08~~
Last season (06/07) Ronaldo was a key player in helping them win the Barclays Premiership scoring the most number of goals for Man U and the second highest after Drogba. He scored 17 in the premiership and 26 for Man U last season, what a total for a midfielder, in fact it is the highest ever for a midfield in the premiership. This is astonishing since he plays on the wing not even forward. Last year Ronaldo was awarded the Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year, only the second time someone has won both in one year after Andy Gray won in it 1977. Ronaldo was also named a member of the PFA Premiership Team of the Year, alongside seven of his fellow Manchester United team mates. He also won Fans Player of the Year. He was names 3rd best in the world at the end of 2007. He won the Portuguese player of the year also. What a year for Ronaldo! In February 6th last year he was named captain against Brazil in a friendly for the first time, the day after he turned 22.
~~Ronaldo chant~~
Fans have been heard shouting "There's only one Ronaldo" but here is the chant which the Man U fans sing the most:
He plays on the left He plays on the right That boy Ronaldo Makes England look sh*t
~~This Season~~
He was sent off in a game against Portsmouth in the second game of the premiership after being wound up and having a number of dangerous tackles on him he lost his temper. Sir Alex Ferguson said he had "fallen into the trap". Ronaldo was disappointed that he would have to miss the next three matches and promised to keep his temper and has had no problems since. When Ronaldo scored against his former club this year, the opposition's fans gave him a standing ovation and after the match he admitted to feeling bad for scoring against them however when he played them again and scored he said it was his duty to Man U. Is goal scoring record is great so far this season after Sir Alex Ferguson asked him to score more this season than he did last season. So far he is the highest scorer in the Premiership with 13 goals half way through the season and 19 in total. So far he has scored 69 goals for Man U and 48 in the premiership.
In December 2007, it was revealed that Ronaldo's mother, Dolores Aveiro, is battling breast cancer. Ronaldo is 22 years old and has already lost his father and now this. Our thoughts are with him.
In my opinion MU has a great physical effort and we could see this on the pitch. Moreover, they are very skilful by having a great player like CRISTIANORONALDO, ROONEY and many more to say. The team also have a very attractive game play which makes the spectators fun to watch and also not to forget they're fine team work which they demonstrate on the pitch during the game. To tell about their defencive quality they do have a very good stopper such as RIO FERDINAND and many more. The quality of their management also at its highest peak. As all of us know MANCHESTER UNITED is one of the richest team. To say more we could clearly see the evidence of a great team in MU as they won the WORLD CLUB CUP. ...
Kevin Kurányi has been one of the most overrated strikers of recent years. The more important the game is, the more likely he is to lose it- the exact opposite of Miroslav Klose, e.g. And the national coaches have obviously noticed the same tendency, because he very rarely makes it to the opening eleven.
If Germany want to make it to the final, they will have to rely on Klose, Gomes and Ballack scoring the necessary goals, Kurányi isn't going to deliver.
But isn't soccer all about sensational looks and great hair-dos, you might ask referring of course to David Beckham, CristianoRonaldo and Carlos Valderrama. You can call me old-fashioned, but no, it most certainly is not. ...
