Before Christmas several shops had offers for tins of chocolates and I bought a big tin of Cadbury Roses. We are still digging into them but I have sampled them all, even the ones I dislike! My tin contained 1.05kg, I do wish I had counted how many chocolates were in the tin, but on second thoughts I don't want to know how many we have consumed although they have been shared with friends and family! Best before date is April 2009, I was surprised to see the contents are stamped on the base although different chocolates could be replaced if necessary. There is information on the makers Cadbury Trebor Bassett and contact details, if you need to complain. Although it does say there could be a white bloom if the chocolates have been left in the sun or exposed to heat, which is harmless. There is a list of ingredients and a note that Soya and nuts are contained in some of the chocolates, and all the chocolates contain milk and traces of nuts and Soya. Roses
are also available in boxes and included in my tin was a leaflet shaped like the box with pictures and names of the chocolates so you can be sure of picking the ones you like best!
I think I paid £4.99 for the tin on offer but currently a 220gram box can cost £2.59 at Sainsbury's. Doing some calculations I think there would have been between 94 -100 chocolates in the tin, so they cost about 5p each when bought on offer, but double that if buying a box.
At first I just started eating them and realised I would need to do this review over a few days sampling the chocolates one at a time! I will do my best to describe them for you
Country Fudge, wrapped in a bronze foil wrapper is just like a finger of fudge to give the kids a treat, sweet, firm to bite into and covered in chocolate. Delicious.
Hazel whirl, wrapped in purple with orange edges, it is a whole hazelnut covered in chocolate and in a swirl finish to the round shape. The milk chocolate tastes creamy and the nut is firm and crunchy. Definitely one of my favourites.
Chocolate Bite - a chocolate covered rectangle in a shiny pink foil wrapper. Chocolate with a crispy filling, like bits of Crunchiebar or crisp biscuit. Hard to bite into but lovely to eat, it disappeared too quickly! Excellent.
Orange Crisp in orange foil, another rectangular shaped chocolate, really hard to bite into - I wanted to see the inside to review it, or might have been tempted to pop it straight in my mouth! The inside is very hard chocolate with crunchy bits of orange, which look like bits of boiled sweets. OK, but not my favourite.
Tangy Orange cream - a small square sweet, slightly domed and with a pattern of sun rays. Well that wasn't very successful! It smelled really orangey, and I bit it in half and ended up with runny filling all down my chin. Definitely a straight in the mouth chocolate! The filling was very soft and plenty of orange flavour. I admit I prefer harder chocolates and have always left creams, so was surprised by the filling, and to tell the truth it wasn't as bad as I expected! In my mind it wasn't a cream filling.
Hazel in caramel is a crescent shaped chocolate wrapped in purple foil which has a design on top with soft caramel filling and a hazelnut. The nut was quite small and the caramel very sweet, all in all rather disappointing. I'm sure Roses used to have Brazil nuts this shape.
Golden Barrel, wrapped in gold, it is half of a barrel shaped chocolate full of soft caramel, one I really like.
Caramel velvet - a rectangular shaped chocolate almost like a casket. The wrapper says it contains Soya. Full of lovely caramel and plenty of chocolate covering.
Brazilian Darkness wrapped in orange foil with gold edges, it is square, covered in dark chocolate with a hard nutty toffee inside. Hard for me to start chewing it, but a lovely flavour once it starts to soften. Lasts quite well. Beware of those fillings!
Caramel - a square of toffee covered in milk chocolate, I couldn't bite it but managed to remove some coating to see the pale golden toffee inside. This is not good if you have fillings or wear dentures! This also says it contains Soya. But does taste good once the caramel softens.
Strawberry Dream, wrapped in pinky red foil - I'm not a lover of the soft centres, but this isn't creamy like I thought it would be more the consistency of runny caramel but a dull pink and not even very strawberry flavoured. All I can say the centre spoiled the chocolate.
Cadbury Dairy Milk, looking just like a miniature block of milk chocolate, it has two joined tiny squares and is wonderful. Cadbury makes such good chocolate.
Some I like and others I really dislike, like the creams, but I have never liked them. Fortunately my hubby eats the creams without complaining so these work out quite well for us, but once they're finished it will probably be next Christmas before I buy another tin, as there are a lot more chocolates I prefer.
*Fun news!* It does say to be enjoyed as part of a healthy, active lifestyle! If you eat roughly 10 of Cadbury Roses chocolates that is 100 grams and it has a massive 490 kcals of which 24.1 grams is fat, but look on the bright side and you are getting 4.5grams of your requirement of 45 grams of protein! But it has 63.6 grams of carbohydrate and the average daily allowance is only 230grams.
*Idea!* If you leave the tin at the other end of the room so you have to get up each time you may burn off an odd calorie and if you throw the paper in the bin and miss, get up and pick it up, that burns off a bit too! On the other hand just eat one a day as a wee treat!

Advantages: Cadbury's chocolate is one of the best kinds, and there are some nice flavours in here Disadvantages: As everyone has said, quite a few old favourites have gone and there's less variety now

Review of Cadbury Roses
Advantages: no coffee creme, you don't mind giving them to unexpected/unwanted visitors!! Disadvantages: not suitable for young children and they will probably be in my cupboard for months
