CADBURY 99 FLAKE
The box of these 4 'cornetto' shape cones comes in the traditional Cadbury Flake colours of yellow and purple, with a picture of said cone on the outside of the box. The box states "Real Cadbury Pleasure" and describes these as " Vanilla flavour ice-cream with a milk chocolate flake".
Each of these 4 cones is 125ml and the best before date is June 2006 so a long shelf life and no likelihood of them lasting that long.
The back of the box is split between the origins of the Flake 99 ice-cream cones (which I shall not bother to copy but can be found at the address at the end of this review) and the usual list of ingredients/nutritional information and storage instructions.
So thats the boring bit out of the way!
WHO CAN EAT THESE?
Well Cadburys tell us they ARE suitable for vegetarians. However, despite the obvious that these will contain some milk product there is NO advice for allergy sufferers. I do think that all products should state one way or another be it obvious or not.
Some of the ingredients listed are Reconstituted Buttermilk, Milk Chocolate, Wheat Flour, and Dried Whey so if you do have an allergy PLEASE check the full list.
Each cone contains 240 calories so not brilliant for those watching the calories.
APPEARANCE
Looks jus like a cornetto type cone really! The tear off paper wrapping comes complete with with plastic cap to protect the very yummy flake log, which has been delicately placed in the top.
The cone is quite a dark brown with the standard waffle weave pattern. An inch or so of ice cream sits on top of the cone (as well as all the way through) with a few delicate chocolate curls nestling in the top around that flake.
Now to me there are 2 types of vanilla ice cream. The 'whiter' coloured vanilla and the 'yellowy' coloured vanilla. I'm sure you all know what I mean! This has not been made with cream as its the whiter vanilla and has a more thinner consisitency.
MY EATING EXPERIENCE
Ok, I may struggle to find the right descriptions and words here but on my first bite and my teeth glide through the ice cream. Its texture is very smooth and immediately melts in my mouth. No chance of it making the roof of my mouth that cold that I have to shift the 'blob' to another part of my mouth as its melted in a flash. Disappointingly its quite bland, no real vanilla taste. In fact there is no taste to it at all. Its just cold and wet!
Another bite that includes a few chocolate curls. This is much better. The chocolate has a slight crunch to it and the smooth milk chocolate taste makes you forget about the blandness of the ice cream. Quite good really because your tongue doesn't have to share that chocolate taste with anything else!
A few more bites and I get to the biscuit cone. This turns out to be even more enjoyable. The biscuit is sweet, not overpoweringly so and does crunch, akin to eating a one of those biscuit 'rolls' you get with a coffee. (I was concerned that maybe half way through the biscuit may become a little softer due to the temperature of the ice cream inside rising, but this was not the case)
The texture of the cone along with the smoothness of the ice cream compliment one another very well and along with a bite of the flake (and we all know how yummy a flake is) give an overall delicious cooling, chocolately and refreshing sensation. As a Flake is quite 'powdery' and can get stuck to the roof and sides of your mouth, eating it with the ice cream prevents this happening, so you enjoy the chocolate taste before it all glides effortlessly down your throat. Also as it has been frozen it does not make as many crumbs, meaning more for me!
The Flake is exactly the same taste as the 'normal' version just shorter in size at only approx 3" long.
As you get to the tapered end of the cone you discover the last inch or so is just filled with solid Cadburys chocolate. I could have ate this as a whole but I chose to bite it in half which was very dificult to do as it was still very cold and solid. It was a little too cold I think as I didn't get the full taste of the chocolate unless I left it to melt in my mouth, unlike the curls which were small and thin enough to taste straight away. It was quite a thick texture which left it clinging to the sides of my mouth and left me wanting a bite of ice cream to 'rinse' it all away….something I didn't have as it was all gone!
Although I have eaten biscuit, ice cream and chcolate together, the ice cream has melted that quick it almost seems as if I haven't had any. So the main taste is that of the chocolate and biscuit.
With no bitter or unpleasant aftertaste, this cone left me with a full tum, a satisfied chocolate craving and cooler and refreshed. Exactly what I wanted!
MY THOUGHTS.
Firstly I have to say, there is no real difference between this and a Walls cornetto. The shape and taste are nearly the same. The only difference I noticed is that these have no nuts on them like a Cornetto does. I did enjoy eating this however, and will buy them again.
One thing I do like is that because the ice cream is contained within the cone they are easier and not as messy to eat. No chance of it melting or dripping on your hand or clean T shirt so this makes them ideal for little ones too who maybe take a little longer to eat their ice creams.
My own personal choice when eating a 99 from the ice cream man (big kid that I am!) is to push the flake down through the ice cream into the cone itself. You cannot do this with these. The ice cream is too compact and frozen to allow you any movement at all. The ideal temperature to eat ice cream at is, apparently, 8C so maybe next time I should wait for it to thaw a bit.
The personal dilemma I had was that I wanted to eat the Flake last, (yes I know...) so either I had to hold it in my other hand where it started to melt in my fingers, or I had to put it down somewhere and hope that no other 'toad' nicked it whilst I wasn't looking.
Also despite their size I found it quite filling. I ate one in the afternoon and found that even with a late teatime I wasn't that hungry. Maybe thats just me though.
Some ice creams leave me feeling thirsty afterwards but these cones did not do that thanks to the thiness of the ice cream and how quick it melted. Maybe its not that bad after all!
With there being just 4 in a pack these make a nice change to have in the freezer rather than 12 of something that you end up not enjoying.
Another good thing for those that are tight on space in their freezer is that I took these out of the box and stored them as they were. The wrapper is secured over the rim of the plastic cap and they happily got bashed by chips and a few other things and the plastic cap remained intact. Though I suggest you don't go bashing them on purpose!
Cadburys do one other version which is the strawberry. This has strawberry sauce on top of the strawberry ice cream instead of chocolate curls.
I would give these an overall rating of 3/5, simply because they are so much like cornettos and the lack of vanilla taste.
PRICE, AVAILIBILITY ETC
These are available in most large supermarkets. I paid £1.96 at Tesco's, making them 49p each.
Made by Fredericks Dairies Ltd, Prospect Place, East Pimbo, Skelmersdale , Lancs under licence for Cadburys.

Oh and do you know why 99's are so called? Well, in the days when Italy had a monarchy the King had 99 soldiers who formed an elite guard. Anything that was 'elite' or 'special' was known as 99. As the UK ice cream industry was full of Italian ex-pats at the time the 99 was launched, it was named to appeal to Italians. (This info can be found on the site)
Thanks for making it this far and if you do buy them...enjoy! x x

Only the crumbliest flakiest chocolate, just like chocolate never…hang on a mo, aren’t I reviewing an ice cream, and not the actual chocolate bar? Yep, that’s right, I must apologise, just getting carried away a bit.
Anyway, the story begins…
The other day I was shopping in Iceland, no don’t be silly now, I actually mean the shop and not the country Iceland, I mean did you honestly think I’d fly ... ...to do a bit of shopping? You did? Oh well, nevermind…
Anyways, I was shopping in Iceland (the shop) and came to the ice cream freezers, I took a quick look and noticed they were offering several of the Mars/Cadburys ice creams at £1.00 off, meaning instead of the £2.50 usually charged, they were on offer for a mere £1.50. There were several to choose from, these included the Cadbury’s Caramel, Maltesers, etc, so I eventually settled for the Cadbury’s ...

Advantages: Not messy, taste nice, well packaged. Disadvantages: Bad for you, you can't really serve it as a dessert at dinner parties
After a recent ice cream related disaster that involved me leaving a tub of Ben and Jerry’s out overnight which resulted in a very unpleasant mess indeed, I decided that I would no longer be a slave to ice cream (anyone who has had the distress of having to throw away a whole tub of ‘Half Baked’ after a good deal of it has leaked all over the table and dripped onto the carpet would sympathise with me on this one, I’m sure.)
The problem is ice cream ... ...is boring - flavours tend to be plain or synthetic tasing and cheap but cardboard cartons of ice cream (Haagen Daz, Ben and Jerrys etc) are too messy. So whats a girl to do? A world without ice cream is an unhappy place indeed...
Ladies and Gentlemen the solution is at hand – Cadburys Flake Ice Cream 99 Cones!!!

...upon a time, the name Cadbury's implied purely chocolate. Dairy Milk. Fruit and Nut. Creme eggs and Mini eggs. Time Outs and Fudges and Crunchies. That time is no more. It's the dawn of a new era because Cadbury's now equals ice cream. So ner. I finished work early on Sunday, meaning that for once some other shops were still open. We all remember flakes, right? It seems to me that no thoughts of my childhood are complete without the memory of walking to the pier, or along the beach, and fetching a huge Mr Whippy with a whole flake proudly planted in the top. While the tub doesn't contain any whole flakes, it does boast what I can only imagine to be the broken up pieces of almost ...

I am hooked. I am hooked on this vanilla flavour ice cream finished with a Cadbury flake milk chocolate bar.
Strangely, I don’t go dizzy over chocolate. I mean, I like chocolate but know when I’ve had enough. Some chocolate deserves a good savour and drool whilst others would be better spat out immediately.
Cadbury’s flake bars are probably up there with my list of favourites. Smooth, creamy, milk chocolate which crumbles in your mouth with a burst ... ...do like ice cream. I think vanilla is probably my favourite – though you could nudge me towards ecstasy with the tasty Greek yogurt ice creams now appearing at a supermarket near everybody.
I have always enjoyed the ice cream wafers and cones which you can buy to go with your ice cream desserts. But the cone which holds the smooth, delicious vanilla ice cream in this mouth watering treat is extra tasty. It has a ‘bite’ to it: it is sweet, though ...

Advantages: Fabulous taste Disadvantages: Have to finish the entire tub
...same thing! Not invented by Cadbury's a few months ago, but invented by ice cream men years ago! Not a random fad, but a tried and tested, utterly delicious combination! Let's talk about the ice cream first. It isn't vanilla but a sort of dairy ice cream which is creamy and delicious and could be eaten quite happily on its own. The bits of flake are quite small but mixed generously throughout the ice cream. The combination of the ice cream and the ... ...flake is enough to create the lovely balance of tastes. The texture of the flake, as ice cream men across the land can attest to, is perfect for the ice cream, and this entire tub, I am sorry to say, was polished off in just one night all by myself. I don't know how much this ice cream costs at full price. It probably wouldn't be worth it if it's ridiculously expensive. But it's really good! I bought it in Farmfoods for £1. I am planning to go back ...

Advantages: It's chocolate Disadvantages: get bits come off it all over the place when you bite into it.
A long term favourite of mine, even if it is mostly targetted towards the Girlie chocolate market....... whether on it's own, or jabbed inside that english seaside favourite, the "99 Icecream cone" - which I'm sure most of you'll be familiar with, an icecream cone filled with whippy icecream, and a piece of Cadbury's flake sticking out of it (now also available in a Cornetto style Cadbury's flakeicecream cone, ready to go).
Doesn't take much explaining what it is, Cadbury's chocolate in a sort of stick form, looking like multiple layers fused together (which fall to bits and go all over the place when you bite into it).
Taste, can best be described as creamy milk chocolate, and one of Cadbury's finest products..... definately worth buying, especially if stuck into a cone of Icecream.
Wrapper......... plastic, with the ends ...

You may well have tried a Flake before and most people have probably seen one of their adverts of their lifetime. 'Only the crumbliest flakiest chocolate, taste like chocolate, never tasted before.'
CadburysFlakes are available in normal size & half sizes which are sold in boxes for using in ice-creams to make a 99 (basically just an icecream cone with a blob of icecream and a half flake stuck in the cone, most people have eaten these in their lifetime!
The flake is in a yellow foil-type wrapper with the Cadbury logo and the nutritional information.
A flake is a very crumbly chocolate bar, fairly similar to the inside of a ripple but without the hard chocolate outside.
When you bite in to the chocolate it is deliciously crumbly and you will without fail end up with crumbs all over the place! I normally eat mine ...
