Putting a Calgon tablet into the washing machine with each wash is an act of faith. There is no way a consumer can ever know for sure if it was necessary or effective.
You need at least 2 washing machines to carry out a controlled experiment.
If you steadfastly follow the advice you may still have a need to call in the repair man – and if you ignore it you may still find that you don’t. Such is the lottery of life.
But I was persuaded ... ...manufacturer that does not endorse Calgon as a means of limescale reduction. So when I got my last new washing machine, I gratefully accepted a free sample of Calgon and have kept using it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations ever since. I wish I hadn’t bothered with the expensive insurance they sold me at the same time as it’s now expired and I’ve never seen a washing machine repair man.
At £6.99 for 30 tablets, it’s not a cheap undertaking ...

Well, I use Calgon liquid. A small dose of Calgon in the soap compartment of your washing machine for EACH wash, and the problem is avoided. It is however available in powder and tablets, whatever your choice, the results stay the same.
Whatisit ?
Calgon is an anti-limescale product that will keep your washing machine running despite living in a hard water area.
Not being a specialist, I can only go with what I see or read.
So, your ... ...I had not used Calgon before last summer when my washing machine started to make a loud racket whilst in the washing cycle.
Complying with popular belief, I went straight to my local supermarket and bought a bottle of Calgon.
TIP : If you had never used it but believe your washing machine needs a good discaling, buy about 3l of white vinegar and run a cycle on empty with it. I have used it religiously ever since and my washing machine has quieten ...

Advantages: Very effective in removing limescale, requires less washing powder Disadvantages: Unnecessary in soft water areas, don't use with prewash
...been thickly coated and the Calgon was removing the scale very effectively.
As well as being very effective it is also less expensive than it first appears. By removing the limescale from the water it effectively gives you soft water. The instructions state "Dose the quantity of laundry detergent recommended for soft water". For me this saves about 10p per wash and the tablets work out at about 20p each, so the overall cost is about half the purchase ... ...I have only used the tablets. The tablets come in boxes of 15 or 30 and each tablet is individually plastic wrapped. To use them simply place them on top of the washing powder in the dispenser. Originally the advice was to place them in the drum, but the instructions have changed. I have not used the liquid or powder, so I will not offer opinions on those products. ...

Advantages: reduces limescale build up Disadvantages: cost
...hard water area so gave Calgon (both the tablets and the boxed poweder) a try. You simply add them with your washing powder in the machine and set as usual. Simple.
They help in several ways, they reduce the build up of limescale around the heating element, they reduce the amount of electricity used per wash (due to better efficiency) and they also remove the limescale from any other place in the washing machine - the drum has never looked cleaner!

Advantages: keeps washing machine workings shiny and new! Disadvantages: cost
...the other reviews left about calgon and realised that previous reviewers may be using more than required!
I work for a chain of stores which sell electrical goods such as washing machines (but will keep the company name disclosed) and receive frequent training in product areas.
One of the most recent areas i have studied is the essentials section to make sure that my customers get the best out of their purchases at the lowest cost possible and ... ...calgon does reduce the limescale etc but from the other reviewers they think that this is only happening when calgon is added to every wash or every other wash. This is not true. We (as a company) have been told by a rep from calgon that in most areas only need to make use of calgon once to twice a week! This is based on an average family of fours washing in an average water area. So forget about putting in a calgon table each wash, cut it down to ...
