*** I have amended this review to say that as of 1st September 2004 - all UK National Calls are FREE! Just a 1p surcharge per call. You cannot get much better than that! ****
There are a huge number of telephone call providers on the market and I have searched each one of them for the deal that is the best fit for my lifestyle.
We have family and friends in the USA and we desperate to undercut the appalling costs charged by BT. One-Tel came to our rescue initially and we used this service for two years enjoying a call rate of 3p per minute for the USA. But this still gave us some quite substantial phone bills and the search continued.
Every other call provider that offered rates lower than One-Tel seemed to want your whole call package, in that all your local and national calls would be routed through that provider.
Then a chance comment by a work colleague caught my attention, ‘Have you tried 18866?’
I looked at the Website (call18866.co.uk) and found a very simple low-key business. I was somewhat sceptical. But I did my homework and performed some Internet searches on 18866 and found that many University websites were recommending this service.
I decided to go ahead and have not looked back.
>International:
My calls to the USA now cost just 1p per minute. That has slashed my monthly bill from the average £36 from One-Tel to just £12 from 18866.
Some of the more recent 18866 International Charges are as follows:
Algeria 5p/min Bosnia-Herzegovina 9p/min Botswana 5p/min Egypt 10p/min Ghana 5p/min Kenya 10p/min Mongolia 1p/min Pakistan 10p/min Serbia & Montenegro 5p/min Trinidad & Tobago 5p/min Uganda 5p/min
A BT call to Pakistan can be 65p/min on the daytime tariff.
>National and local:
In the past few days the UK National and local calls have dropped from 1p per minute (which was a bargain) to just 0.5p p/min at all times. (NOW FREE!!!!) Calls are subject to a penny connection fee.
>Mobile Phones:
Calls to mobile phones vary but for my O2 mobile, weekday calls are 10p per minute and weekend/evening calls are just 2p per minute. This is the published 18866 rate for ALL UK mobiles
Weekend calls to UK mobiles will be charged at ONLY 2p/min Weekday daytime/weekday evening calls will be charged at only 10p/min
Compared to weekend Onetel charges of 6p/min.
>Sign Up to 18866:
To sign up just log in to the Website, complete a simple form and within an hour in my case I was making 1p per minute calls to the USA. I checked my account on the Website later that evening and my calls were all listed to the minute - brilliant.
Using the service is simplicity itself. Just dial 18866 before the number you wish to dial. Before connection a reassuring voice will tell you exactly how much per minute you will be paying for the call.
There is also good news for all NTL, Telewest, other non-BT landline and mobile customers. The 18866 service can now be accessed using the freephone number 0808 170 77 88.
How does it work? Once registered just call 0808 170 77 88 from your registered telephone number. Wait for the voice prompt and dial the number you would like to call.
All bills are paid via direct debit and invoices are sent each month to your registered email address.
This is a completely Internet based service. No people, just you and a Website and I believe it to be very easy to use and very secure.
You cannot dial Premium Rate numbers using 18866. Also be aware that when dialing numbers such as 0870 and 0845 it is cheaper to use the BT landline.
>Balances:
The online balance can be checked at any time and the itemised statement is easy to read and totally up to date. This is unlike One-Tel which has VAT added at a later date and can always be a few days out.
>Summary:
BT used to have its uses though. Charging just 5.5p per HOUR for evening/weekend national and weekend calls. This used to undercut 18866, but now they are FREE!!!!
It is quite difficult to produce direct comparisons with BT as the have such a wide-ranging price structure using their ‘together’ packages.
18866 however are totally up front with their charges and the Website (call18866.co.uk) shows these quite easily.
There is no monthly subscription, registration or administration charge.
The advertised tariff for each destination is all-inclusive, even including VAT. Calls are subject to a connection fee of only 1p.
BT will not charge you for dialling the 18866 code, therefore the 18866 code will not appear on your BT bill and Call18866 will only invoice any calls made using the 18866 code.
If you are a non-BT landline customer using 0808 170 7788 the call to the 0808 number should be free of charge and any calls made using the 0808 freephone number will only be invoiced by Call18866.
If you are a mobile customer using the 0808 170 7788 number you may also be charged for the 0808 call by your mobile provider. Charges may vary depending on your operator and tariff plan; please check with your mobile operator for correct 0808 rates.
Apart from a 1p-call connection charge there are no extra charges. None whatsoever.
>Conclusion:
18866 have saved me a good £100 in the past few months. So use the prefix 18866 and remember – it’s good to talk! (With 18866 you can actually afford to do so.)
Advantages: A fraction of the price of BT's rates, easy to set up and use Disadvantages: Have to remember the prefix, not cheap for off-peak calls
I discovered 18866 after a particularly horrific BT bill. £75 a quarter might seem like peanuts to heavy phone users, but to a couple on a low wage using the phone every few days, it seemed extortionately high.
I looked into BT prices a little more closely for the first time, and then looked for companies that could out-do them. Rather than do a dull resume of the 18866 service, I'll try writing this op a little differently - giving eight separate ... ...NATIONAL CALLS
18866 charge just 1p a minute for a national peak call at any time. To put that into context, BT charge almost 8p a minute peak on their Standard Tarriff for the same thing. Even on a Together package, BT's charge is 3p a minute peak. That's an enormous saving - for a 20 minute call in the daytime, you could save anything from 20p to a massive 70p. Even BT's main competitor TalkTalk costs 2.7p/minute, so 18866 wins over both hands ...

After taking a look at my finances recently, and realising what a mess they are in, I made it a goal to firstly cut my phone costs. My first visit was to a website I really must do a review on www.moneysavingexpert.com From this site I managed to find two fantastic sites to sign up to: www.call18866.co.uk and www.call1899.co.uk which I shall write about in another review.
Regsitration.
Registration is free, is online only, and whilst I only use ... ...now use the service. The normal registration information is required - name, address, email address, telephone number or numbers, and payment details. Payments are made by either credit card or debit card, not by direct debit, but unlike some companies that only keep your debit card details for one transaction, 18866 keep the details and after sending an invoice by email (if you use AOL like myself they block the email so use a different email address), ...

Advantages: It just gets better! Disadvantages: The name just doesn't quite "click"? -that's all
My wife & I use our phone(s) a lot. In fact, should phoning the world ever become an Olympic event The Bride will be representing Wales!
A couple of years ago I took a dislike to the way my concerns were being treated by the monolith that purported to be Britain's National Telephone Company. As a customer of 40 odd year's standing, I felt that I was entitled to a competent, competitive and accessible service. So I voted with my feet and avowed (as ... ...income stream.
I changed to OneTel –and our halved my domestic phone bill almost immediately. Their customer focus and the cheerful enthusiasm of their staff were like a breath of fresh air and I still believe OneTel to be a business of groundbreaking value and integrity. But times change and, not wishing to let "inertia" take a hold, I kept looking around.
Quite by chance I discovered a Telco that is just as reliable and transparent as OneTel ...

Advantages: UK Calls for 1p - Cheap overseas calls Disadvantages: You have to dial 18866 first - but that's not a problem!
Being a single parent I do not have money to burn. That is one of the reasons I am a member of Ciao – I can compare prices and read reviews before spending my hard-earned money.
British Telecom have had the lion’s share of the UK telecoms market for far too long, and have the financial muscle to advertise widely on TV and other national media. BT claim that thousands of people are coming back to them. For the life of me I can’t imagine why. BT has ... ...so much more expensive than many of its competitors – why would anyone want to be ripped off by them?
Whether your phone line is provided by BT, a different company or is a mobile, it is not difficult to start saving money, and the cheapest place I have found for standard 01 and 02 UK calls is www.call18866.co.uk.
HOW TO START SAVING
The longest call I have made so far was a peak rate call to Kent that lasted 51 minutes. How much did it cost using ...

Advantages: None Disadvantages: bad service, no longer the cheapest, less easy for onetel, 18866 etc
There are two main reasons why NTL is an extremely bad choice - customer service and price.
NTL used to have one advantage - about 5 years ago - it was cheaper than bt. It's 3-2-1 offer made the hassle of having to deal with them worthwhile. But not now.
BT's basic offering is 50p / month cheaper (no big deal admitedly). But call rates make the biggest difference. Swap to BT and you can use lots of different call providers - called long distance operators in the US. The cheapest I've found is the no frills call18866.com. 2p connection and then free, anytime, UK calls. 2p/min to the US. They are setup by a big Swiss Telecoms company and don't offer the neat website and call centre of Onetel to keep their prices down. They are cheaper than any of the all inclusive packages that you can buy unless you make hundreds of calls ...

Advantages: Cheap Phone Calls Disadvantages: Remembering to add prefix
Several of my Ciao friends, will have seen the review that I have just written for 18866. Some of this information will be repetitive because the two companies are connected, however you will find some differences especially with the call prices.
For those of you who have not read my 18866 review, I found www.call1899.co.uk through doing some research on another site I love www.moneysavingexpert.com
I have been a member of a different telephone company for getting my phone calls in an all inclusive price, but unfortunately I found that I was spending more than I had been without them.
Registration.
Once on the website, registration is free for both the regular public as well as companies. Registration is available for BT users, although they do now have facilites for non-BT, NTL, Telewest and mobile users, although ...
