There's a moment in Modern Warfare where I realised Infinity Ward had utterly nailed the metamorphosis of Call of Duty. Playing as a U.S. Marine and staggering from the flaming ruins of a downed chopper, I fell and breathed my last toxic breaths surveying a scene of desolate post-nuclear destruction. This interlude was entirely for dramatic effect, you see, and on its own would have been a pretty awesome moment for any FPS. Yet it was something else which made this a uniquely refreshing inclusion for a game in the genre: the Americans were partly to blame.
Freed from the shackles of historical accuracy and the respectful obligation to glorify Allied war heroes of yesteryear, Call of Duty expertly exploits its modern-day licence to portray war the way it should be: ugly, visceral, and at times morally ambiguous. Playing the split role of S.A.S. soldier and U.S. Marine, with a bit of Russian Spetsnaz thrown in to remind us that we're all supposed to be friends now, you're whisked around the world playing a mix of stealthy infiltration and balls out yee-hawing against a nuclear enabled Russian separatist and his newly destabilised Middle Eastern ally state. The identity of these Middle-Eastern allies remains in the realm of safe ambiguity, although I'm sure those of us with a wider understanding of the political spectrum than say, my hamster, could work out a couple of likely candidates.
The action feeds from the storyline and vice versa, which is unusually involving as you feel events are developing organically rather than being arbitrarily spoon fed to you after a lengthy stint at the controls. Infinity Ward have chosen to largely do without the omnipresent film crew as a vehicle to deliver the plot, instead dispersing information using mission briefings and in-game voice comms. This is eminently effective, as the narrative can develop without glorifying the allies or employing pantomime bad guy theatrics, instead favouring the logical focus of the professional soldier.
Did I mention focus? Yes, you'll need that, and lots of it. One facet of CoD which remains stubbornly intact is the almost unbroken sensory assault of a thousand entrenched enemies firing on your position simultaneously with their ancient but endlessly reliable AK-47's. As if this wasn't difficult enough, there's generally a thousand more belligerent Second-Worlders lobbing grenades with unerring accuracy at your feet, which renders the word 'cover' and the taking thereof a frustratingly transient comfort. No sooner have you crouched behind a crumbling wall and assumed a position to attack when another grenade smugly rattles between your legs; prompting a Swiss-cheese kamikaze to the next cover point. Even diligently picking off your adversaries before advancing yields little reward, as one downed fighter will within a few seconds be replaced with another.
Now this is where we reach the Marmite factor of Call of Duty, as although the scenarios and environments are much improved, the modern weapons great to use, and the storyline more epic and skilfully delivered than almost anything I've seen on an Xbox 360 shooter, there's still a problem with the fundamental game mechanic. The deeper you delve, the more apparent it becomes that Call of Duty remains a glorified shooting gallery. If you are lucky enough to remain in one spot for any length of time, you'll notice that enemies will respawn ad infinitum until you reach a designated trigger point. This might be absolutely fine for some, but if like me you want the reward for a fine long distance headshot to be greater than for your ability to run like stink, you might find this breaks flow a little.
That's not to say all the action is simplified to this extent. The sniper inspired 'All Ghillied Up' & against-all-odds 'Heat' are thrilling infiltration and escape missions in the game's final third, and to be honest two of the most exhilarating stages of any game I've ever played. It's moments like these where the ducks in a row dynamic is concealed by the adrenaline and involvement of the combat, although this high point is indicative of a battle Modern Warfare wins and loses in equal measures over its duration. At some points I was scraping my jaw from the floor in amazement; at others I had it clamped around my fist in frustration.
Some reviews have criticised the campaign's relative brevity, although it's not something I had particular issues with. Had it been any longer I feel the style of game play would have become stale, and in a title so heavily reliant on set pieces you have to wonder what else Infinity Ward could have plausibly thrown our way without eroding all semblance of realism. Besides, the upper difficulty levels will provide a stern challenge for most players, with the Veteran mode beyond those without an iron will and a masochistic streak.
In any event, the multiplayer mode should sate any yearning to spend more time with Modern Warfare. As an online experience, it's unquestionably the closest any FPS came to putting Halo's hat on straight until Left 4 Dead arrived, with a comparable levelling system to offer some degree of geek prestige to those with nothing better to do and/or a lingering self-esteem problem. The class-based system creates more lasting appeal than with its sci-fi rival, as once you've achieved everything as say, a sniper, there are several other classes of infantry to play as and progress. As you gain more experience certain abilities and new equipment become available, which further extends longevity. I initially found this absurd, as to reward the more skilled and experienced players seemed an unfair penalty to place on those new to the game, but overall a balance is struck as the awarding of experience is a one way street on an upward incline.
With Call of Duty 5 now on the shelves, some may dismiss Modern Warfare as old news. Having played both, I'd unreservedly urge you to think twice before making the obvious purchase. Quite how the series found its way back to WWII given the resounding success of its forebear is beyond me, and the game suffers this creatively and technologically stifling transition in all the ways you'd expect. Don't be fooled - this title remains the plimsoll line.
Admittedly, to fully enjoy Modern Warfare's experience you'll need to willingly allow the wool to be pulled over your eyes, as beneath the baubles and trinkets of stellar production values rests a crude and unimaginative style of gaming. Yet somehow this manages to remain one of my favourite games in the genre; a genre I'm growing increasingly tired of. Undoubtedly we'll need to see more ingenuity from Infinity Ward when the franchise is returned to them for the sixth game in the series, especially now it's abundantly clear we're growing tired of shooting Nazi's. They'll need to strip down the metaphorical engine and start again.
Advantages: Great story, Excellent online game and Best ending to a game! Disadvantages: Yet to find any!

...mentioned before I really enjoyed Call of Duty 3 and I wasn't too sure how they could improve this series, especially the on-line play. I felt that another game could push the series a bit thin a bit like some sequels to films.
So after playing this now since its release was I left disappointed or did it completely stop my quest for finding something constructive?
THE IDEA BEHIND THE GAME
Ok I knew before I played this game that the makers had ... ...I wanted to play it, Call of Duty 3 was my favourite on line play and I wanted to see how the makers have topped it. And I am please to report top it they have!! There is so much more to the live play of this game to start with the maps are taken from the game and there are 16 different ones, some are great for snipers and some are just grenade and shoot as fast as you can!
The different matches are Team death match, free for all, domination, ground ...

...much to do with the Call of Duty series. I own Call of Duty 2 for X - Box but wasn't really that impressed to be honest with you. Compared to Brothers in Arms and Medal of Honour I found Call of Duty 2 to be far to easy and although the concept of following the 1st Division through the war was interesting I found there was far to little story line. Additionally the levels were basic and over to quickly. So when a friend offered to trade Call of Duty ... ...by that point) I was a bit apprehensive. But I went for it anyway and I was pleasantly surprised. In COD 4 you take on the roles of Soap Mctavish, newly selected SAS trooper and Sgt Paul Johnson of the US Marines. Missions revolve around arms dealers in Russia and revolution in the Middle East and they are split pretty evenly between the two characters.
The first thing is the graphics which are amazing. Each environment and character are rendered ...

...Call of Duty4: ModernWarfare is a first person shooter game.
I have great invaluable experience with this i love this game as i have it on xbox360. It is centered around a future war involving UK, Russia & USA. The weapons are amazing and the ability to call in airstrikes is my overall favourite. It is PEGI certified at a 16+. The grenade launcher is fun to use and it is not an extremely difficult game to complete in my opinion. Multiplayer is a fun aspect as deathmatches give the game a more interactive feel. I prefer this too any other game of it's sort and it outclasses its predecessors. So if i were you i would purchase it for such a small price. Objects, cars and even buildings can be destroyed which is more of a human-type feel. I believe it was the best shooter of 2007 and it has not been beaten in 2008....
