Introduction
This is the fourth game in this series and this particular one has been made by Infinity Ward, whilst the previous was made by Triarch. This is also somewhat of a gamble for the company as they have strayed away from the typical world war scenario and have opted for this "modern warfare". The typical world war 2 games, as we saw in the previous call of duty have always been successful and brought in many fans. However, this new modern age war is rather fitting with our current international climate and particular with the current fighting in the middle east. This game consists of a rather short, but certainly not disappointing single player campaign and a superb online multiplayer mode. Campaign As i have just mentioned the campaign can be viewed as short, especially when compared with other first person shooter games. However despite this, it is still of very high quality and has many awesome breath taking moments. During the campaign you play as both British SAS and US Marines, in many different scenarios. At first you must complete a simple training level, but are then quickly put right into the middle of the action
on a quickly sinking ship which you must infiltrate and later escape whilst attacking a handful of enemies. You then encounter the real enemy in the game, being terrorist leaders such as Al Asad. in the final level you must save millions of people from a nuclear bomb. You fight a range of enemies from simple soldiers (with a range of weapons from machine guns to RPGs), helicopters, tanks, and even some (very vicious) guard dogs. There are definitely some fantastic moments moments during the game, such as one where you take control of the guns in a helicopter and, using night vision and heat sensors must take out several waves of enemies (and you also have 3 different types of gun from large explosion, to small machine gun). However, my favourite level has to be when you are a sniper and along with a fellow soldier, both wearing ghillie suits, you must take out many enemies. But the real challenge is completing the level without being detected by the enemy (give it a go!). You have to do this by crawling under jeeps and hiding in long grass whilst a whole platoon and a tank pass you.
Of course if this campaign is not enough of a challenge you can always change the difficulty and make it harder, or even put it up to veteran(but this has to be one of the hardest things i have ever tried and can't quite finish). there is also an extra level at the end where you are in a plane and have to take out many enemies. You can also do the levels in a certain time and gain extra points for killing with headshots, etc. I would say the only problems with this campaign is that it is a bit too short, and i would be even more fun to be able to do the campaign with a friend, or even a few. Multiplayer
Of course it is in the multiplayer mode where this game truly shows its class and you get your money's worth. You can play online with up to 18 players on a massive variety of maps and game modes. Several of the maps are adapted from the campaign, such as crossfire which is taken from the level "Bog". The maps are also very varied and range from small, compact levels such as Shipment where the only option is shotguns and grenades, to the massively open level of Overgrown where the best choice is to snipe and hide in one of the many great positions. There is also a variety of modes from the classic team deathmatch to the more tactically orientated modes of sabotage (where you must plant the bomb in the enemy base), or headquarters (where you must capture and control a specific position in the map). Of course there is also cage match (one on one) and hardcore modes for the more experienced gamers in which guns are more powerful and friendly fire is turned (so be careful with those grenades). Another nice touch is that during a match once you get 3 kills in a row without dying you get a radar which shows up the enemy positions, at 5 you get an air strike, and at 7 you get a helicopter which flies around killing any enemies it sees. So the better you are the easier it can be! As well as this, as you play the game you gain points for getting kills, winning games and competing a variety of challenges. You collect these points and progress through the ranks from 1 to 55. The challenges vary from getting so many kills with a certain gun to winning so many deathmatch matches. These as well as giving you extra points and help to unlock extra guns and perks also allow you to get golden guns (once you have completed all challenges) and show off to your friends. If this is still not enough you can undertake prestige and go through the levels again, and this can be done 10 times!!
Other great features include the ability to join or create a clan, and also leader boards in which you can compare all your statistics with your friends and the whole world. You can also create your own class (or up to 6 of them) for online play. You choose a primary and secondary weapon along with 3 perks (special abilities). Here is my preferred class:
Primary: R700 (sniper rifle) Secondary: Golden Eagle (pistol) Perks: claymores, sopping power and increased bullet penetration (can't remember exact name). Conclusion
overall i would have to say this is my favourite game and probably one of the best to date. It includes a good quality campaign, and probably the best online multiplayer out of any game, which you can play for ages and ages.
The price for this game is around £40 (www.play.com or www.game.co.uk). Though you could probably get it cheaper on ebay. I know it is rather expensive as it has been out for a while, but it is definitely worth well more than you pay. If you haven't got this then you should certainly consider buying it!!
