I'm 52, grandmother of 9, poet, wannabe writer, breed Nubian goats, and am going to start making soaps and fudge from my goat milk eventually. I'd like to become semi self -sufficient; I have planted numerous fruit trees and keep chickens for eggs.
We grow houseplants for a variety of reasons but most of them are basically green. Some may have variegated leaves, some may produce colourful flowers, but for the most part, houseplants are GREEN. Well, that's what I used to think, until I discovered Calladiums. These grow from a bulb, and the outline and veins are usually green but the leaves colouring itself varies (dependent on type) from cream and white to a pink tinge, to a more full all over pale pink. And the leaves seem almost transparent.
I planted the bulbs in pots about 9" in diameter, two or three to a pot, in a fine potting compost mixture, watered them and waited. The first shoots appeared in a few days. Deep purple buds growing out of the dark earth. At about 6" tall they began to shoot the tiniest green and white leaves. (I can't remember exactly which variety I bought, but I know they are basically a white leaf with pale pink tinges and the green veins). They are flourishing and provide such a dash of colour amid all my other plants. So simple to propogate , too.
These are plants which prefer indirect sunlight, so when I put them out on my balcony, I place them under my park bench to provide a little shade. Indoors, they are on the floor between my two rattan and glass shelves (which hold pots of trailing ivy plants and spider plants) as eventually they will produce quite large leaves and take up more space than a shelf will allow.
Having had such success with these, I'm now looking forward to getting another batch of pots and bulbs, but this time I'm looking for the ones with the fully pink leaves ...
