~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Product Information ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you first purchase the product, it comes in a cardboard box, open this and discard. Inside is a clear plastic box, with everything you need tidied away inside. Open the hinged lid and laid out on the purple plastic insert is the hand-held thermometer and 20 probe covers. The thermometer is light-weight and fits snugly in your hand, it is mainly white with a few purple areas. Apart from the Calpol label on the top there is also a purple start button which does two things; starts to take temperature when inserted into the ear and also shows the last 12 readings taken, so you don't have to make note of them elsewhere. Underneath there is a LCD screen which shows you the readings, memory readings, battery low and whether you are taking the reading in 'C' or 'F'. Each probe cover is made of paper and stretchy plastic, you need to use a new and undamaged one of these, each time you take a reading for hygiene reasons and to ensure you get an accurate temperature reading. Underneath the unit is a special compartment especially for the instructions, when you pull them out, you need to unpop the little purple clip to access them, and they can then be stored back in the container when not needed. The thermometer takes one CR2032 battery (supplied) and can be replaced easily, when the machine indicates. You shouldn't need to do this too often though as it should last at least 1000 readings.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How to use it ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This thermometer is so easy to use; place a new probe cover onto the hole in the case and insert the probe into it, pressing firmly. Press the on/off switch and wait for 'C' or 'F' to flash, insert into ear snugly and press the start button until you hear a beep. The reading has now been taken. Remove the thermometer and read the LCD screen for measured temperature. Remove probe cover and dispose. Turn off thermometer; return it to case ready for next use.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My Opinion ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When I purchased this model, there wasn't much else to choose from, Braun made one for £39.99, The Calpol one was £29.99 and offered the same functions, at a cheaper price. I've used Calpol products for years (on children I've looked after) and would be happy to use their products. I had always used a small digital thermometer in the past and had to wait ages for the temperature to register, but this machine works really quickly. Babies and children who develop fevers, need to be treated quickly, especially when their immune systems are not yet developed properly. In finding out their temperature quickly, you can help them, by giving them the medication needed, sooner than you would, if waiting a few minutes for a temperature, on an old mercury or digital one under the arm.
I love the case it comes in, not only because my favourite colour is purple. But because everything you need is all tidied away. I had trouble finding the instructions at first, but once I realised where they were and how they stored, I was impressed, as they can be kept tidy, and clean. Also when you do often need instructions, you have put them somewhere 'safe' but can never find them again! Once you have read the instructions and are used to using the thermometer, you may find that you hardly have to refer to them. As the machine is so easy to operate. The buttons are easy to press and the probe covers are easy to fix on and take off again. The only negative thing I would say is - the instructions recommend that you slightly pull the ear back before inserting the probe, when you have a small child on your lap, who may be crying in pain/feeling poorly you can't hold them, pull the ear and insert the probe at the same time. Everyone assumes Mums can do anything! But this does take some juggling. If you can, get someone to help you.
Having a nightlight is a good idea, so you can check the temperature whilst your child is sleeping, but I'm worried that if they are asleep; you pulling their ear and the possibility of 10 beeps being heard may wake them up. So I tend to avoid doing night temperature checking!
The main thermometer is small, easy to hold in your hand and easy to clean. The tip of the probe must be cleaned properly, following guidance from the instructions. The case it all comes in is fairly lightweight too. I would say that if you were to take it on holiday with you it may take up some valuable luggage space. You may prefer to take a smaller digital one instead.
Thankfully my son hasn't been unwell very often, I am glad I have this in the cupboard when I do need it, and I would happily lend it to someone if required. I haven't had to use it on anyone other than my son. When I first got it I practised on myself, the tip of the probe was comfortable in the ear. The design of the tip means you can't push it in too far either.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cost ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As stated before I bought my thermometer for £29.99, I purchased mine in Boots, so I managed to get points on my advantage card. You could get extra points during special weekends/promotions or online. I have been told you can buy it in Mothercare, but haven't seen it elsewhere. Replacement probe covers can be bought in packs of 40, from places like Boots and Mothercare for about £4.99

...one we should and that Calpol made them. Later that night my daughter seemed to get worse and started panting like a dog. We telephoned NHS direct who said we should strip her down to a vest and nappy and give her some paracetomol, about two minutes after that there was a gurgling noise, my daughter went limp, eyes glazed over and stopped breathing. Every parents worst nightmare. After we put her on her side she threw up and started breathing again. ... ...to Boots to buy the Calpol Digital Ear Thermometer.
We then kept a check on her temperature throughout the rest the day. It shot back up to over 40 degrees so we took her back into hospital, where the nurses said it was a good job we had taken her back, if her temperature had gone up much more she would again be in danger of having another seizure. She now seems to be recovering well, running about and causing havoc, never again will I tell her ...

...mother-in-law recently gave us a Calpol digital ear thermometer, and it's great. With two small children, I have used various different thermometers in the past, some better than others, but none were perfect. The forehead scan needs holding in place for too long when dealing with a fretful, feverish toddler, and the mouth/underarm digital thermometer is inaccurate for youngsters as they don't hold it inthe correct place, or maybe not for the required ... ...3 seconds to register, and plays a little melody on starting and finishing taking the temperature. My 2 year old daughter loves this tune, and even when feeling really poorly, she smiles when she sees me getting out the ear thermometer !! The thermometer speaks out the temperature, and also stores the previous 30 readings for comparison. It takes 2 AAA batteries, which last a long time as it turns itself off after a few minutes of non-use. My thermometer ...
