I would like to tell you about my experiences with the Cambridge audio DVD 57.This machine is very well equipped and competitively priced, currently at only £99.95 from richer sounds. To my knowledge, it is not available elsewhere as richer sounds are the sole retailer of Cambridge audio products. That in itself is not a problem, as richer sounds have shops in most major towns throughout the U.K. FEATURES: This machine comes with progressive scan, a feature not normally found on DVD players with a price tag this low.
Basically, if you own a TV, plasma screen or LCD with component video inputs, then progressive scan will give you a much clearer picture with much less flicker than normal.
All you need are a set of leads for component video, which your dealer can supply, connect them from your DVD player to your inputs and that’s it, job done! Another feature of this player is that it also plays music CD’S with great effect, something that is not usually associated with a DVD player.
Alright, I know that a music CD can be played on most DVD players, but not like this! I connected my DVD 57 to my hi-fi system and compared it to my NAD CD player. Okay, the CD player was better and so it should be, but the surprise was that the DVD 57 was almost as good. Praise indeed.
As with all DVD players, the main requirement is it’s ability to play DVD’S!!!!! This machine does this with ease and simplicity.
The main features of this machine are that it has Dolby digital and DTS decoders built in, plus of course,DVD audio and all the usual bits associated with a DVD player, like 32x fast forward and rewind, still frame,slow play,controls for different sound effects and picture styles and last, but not least an on screen display, among many others.
All the features can be accessed by the supplied remote control and are fairly easy to understand. Please bear in mind that I have only owned this machine for three days and I have found it very easy to use. PERFORMANCE: Once i had connected the player to my TV and HI-FI, I then loaded, of all things the “CHICKEN RUN” DVD!! As I know what the picture was like on my previous DVD player with this film, I thought it would be a good test.
Straight away, I could see a noticeable difference in the picture quality. Colours were sharper and the overall picture was clearer, sound was crisper and cleaner and more defined. Altogether a much nicer viewing experience. I prefer to have the player connected to my HI-FI or home cinema system, although this is a very capable player when just connected to your TV. CONCLUSION: With it’s ability to play music with great finesse and it’s capability of playing DVD with high quality pictures, this is a very accomplished machine which deserves a recommendation purely on it’s merits.
Given that it has a retail price of £200, but is now available at £99.95, this is surely a bargain that should not be missed. The buyer can even get a three year warranty from richer sounds for £19.95. An absolute steal!!
