THX are not a standard. It is just a certification that that particular product meets a strict criterion. And this criterion and certification comes from Lucas Art’s. Cambridge Soundworks Megaworks 5.1 THX 550 achieves this certification. With 500 RMS of power, it does get the certification in a big way.

It comes in a big box and the manual are clear as spring water. The first thing you’ll notice is about this system is that the metal badge (to me anyway). That THX logo just makes the owner proud of having this unique system. It has a big wooden subwoofer and 5 satellites speakers. But don’t let the satellites size fool you, the got power in the sound they make. The power of the subwoofer alone is just enough to make the person living downstairs to make a complaint about the noise. The set-up is easy and you can get it ready to play in just minutes. All satellites have desktop stands including the remote.

This system has a remote control which is wired to the subwoofer. It’s not too short or too long, but about appropriately right. It wouldn’t hurt if it got longer though. On this remote, you can control the master, center, rear volumes, the treble and the bass. There’s also a headphone-out in the remote for those who wanted to listen with headphones.

To get the best performance from this system is to get it connected to a 5.1 soundcard. The music coming from this system is harmonic in is such away that is cools you down when you play some tunes. Provided you play the right tune in the first place of course.

Watching DVDs with this speaker is a blast. The explosions are loud and clear, the conversations are crisp, and the sound effects are pretty good. I can’t say the same thing about playing games though. I don’t normally play games on my pc but when I do, it’s the old games that I played and they don’t take advantage of this system. But I bet they must be fantastic as this system is suitable for EAX games. In other words, it delivers a superb sound when playing EAX games.

When you’re playing music and then you can hear hissing noise, which means you’re too close with the speakers. Try to position them according what it says in the manual. If you ask me about the cable’s length, it is just a bit short to me for the front and center speakers. But perfect for the rear.

To sum up, the THX 550 is a wonderful package. It is loud and it looks great. It is easy to install and easier to get complaints from next door neighbors. But for a price tag that is “expensive” what you pay is what you get. A THX certifies 5.1 speakers system. No compromises here. But I just wished they include floor stands in the package. Sigh.
