Good starter lens
Review of Sony SAL1870 - zoom lens - 18 mm - 70 mm F/3.5-5.6 by
jtamagnini
Advantages: standard zoom kit lens, KM compatible
Disadvantages: some darkening at widest angle
...that comes with the new Sony Alpha 100 digital SLR camera (dSLR).
It fits on to a the Sony a-mount or for those who have one of the old Konica Minolta Dynax camera, it will fit in the KM-mount. However it is a digital only lens so film purists will not be served well by it.
Taking photos with this lens using the Sony camera is a dodle. The auto-focus or manual is done on the camera body so the lens only has two controls and those are lens length ... ...The lens length is a large ring control in the centre which is of smooth operation with just enough resistance so you don't knock it accidently but not so much where movements could be jerky. Auto-focus is fast and very reliable but not as quiet as some would like, certainly not one for stealth operation!
Manual focus is through a ring control right at the front. The lens could benefit from markers indicating distance from the object in focus but ...

Sharp and slow.
Review of Nikon Zoom-Nikkor zoom lens - 70 mm - 300 mm F/4.0-5.6 by
Reaver2k
Advantages: Sharp, easyily fitted
Disadvantages: Rather large, loud AF.
...telephoto lens for my new(ish) Nikon D70, currently only trusting Nikkor lenses (literally can't afford for it not to be good quality).
I've tried it out a handful of times, on architecture and portrait photography mostly.
As a "rookie" to photography I thought I would look for my first telephoto lens to be within a reasonable budget, this is what I came up with after having a look around.
The lens is very well built and sturdy, relatively heavy ... ...of a weight loss between lenses, what's a couple of grams eh? So far its produced sharp images when using a tripod (without VR (vibration reduction) your never going to be able to hold a 300mm lens x 1.4 by hand without blurring the image, either that or I have horrible technique).
The main hit I felt when I tried out this lens for the first time, was how long and noisy the Auto Focus was, often going straight past the right focus, back and forth ...

Sigma EX macro lens - 105 mm F/2.8
Review of Sigma EX macro lens - 105 mm F/2.8 by
stevieray
Advantages: value for money (compared to pro level), build quality,
Disadvantages: makes you think your a pro, but by its nature, proves you otherwise.
This sigma lens is often a favourite starting point for digital SLR users (single lens reflex) looking to upgrade the 'kit' package they bought on impulse in the January sales.
"I know, I've got a million pix of my children and cat, now I'll photograph flowers and insects with a macro lens, whatever that is".
Don't kid yourself; the whole idea of this lens is to get close-up and personel with your subject matter (insects and flowers being two of ... ...just to add to your camera bag, go and by a mid-sized zoom lens. Macro photography is not for the faint-hearted. It requires patience, skill and an understanding beyond that of the family photo album. But the rewards are excellent.
With a good, solid build quality and good optics; it is worth buying if you can't afford a pro quality macro lens. It's a bit slow on auto focus, but if you shooting macro the chances are that the subject is pretty still. ...

Sigma 10-20mm - pro quality at amateur price
Review of Sigma EX zoom lens - 10 mm - 20 mm by
jasonandreas
Advantages: excellent image quality, sturdy build, great price
Disadvantages: relatively slow aperture, slight softness in mid-range of zoom.
The Sigma 10-20mm EX lens is a low-to-mid priced lens, aimed at the amateur/enthusiast market and available in the usual Canon and Nikon mounts.
I own the Canon-fit, so all information contained in this review is in relation to that lens.
For anyone interested in landscape photography, a wide-angle lens is a must-have piece of equipment. With standard kit lenses generally weighing in at the 18mm range at their widest zoom setting, you will be astonished ... ...given the pricetag and the Sigma EX badge - a mark of quality on Sigma's lens range - and the weight is satisfying. It may feel surprisingly heavy for those users previously used to buying at the cheaper end of the lens market. The lens mount is metal, meaning this is a lens built to last and the zoom and focus rings move easily, but with enough resistance to avoid any creep - important at this level of zoom.
The important aspect of any lens, of ...

Apple iPod Dock Connector
Review of Apple iPod Dock Connector To USB 2.0 Data cable by
CloudRuler
Advantages: Easy to use, decent speed
Disadvantages: Not particularly reliable
This cable comes with your iPod. It's the only way provided free with the iPod for you to recharge it. You plug it into a desktop or laptop computer and your iPod will charge via the power provided to the computer.
It seemed adequate enough when I was first using it, as long as the cable works and it's not too slow there aren't many complaints you can have unless it breaks. Clearly my luck isn't too good. The cable broke after 2-3yrs, it didn't ... ...recharge but which is cheaper, replacing the iPod battery or buying a new cable? I wasn't too pleased to find out the price of a new cable so I decided to go with a cheap import from Hong Kong (not an iPod brand cable) which cost me only £2-3 and I've had no problems with it as of yet. I certainly wouldn't pay the £13-16 the iPod cable costs.
Overall I'd say the cable is easy to use, fairly speedy but not reliable. I'd have many different types ...
