Vivitar 285 review
Advantages: durable, adjustable power Disadvantages: slow recycling, heavy
I got given this by a friend who knew I needed a flash gun (but couldn't afford one) and he had one to spare. Unfortunately he didn't have the manual so working out how to use it was a bit of a guessing game. Positives: Very sturdy and durable. Flash direction can be adjusted up and down (from shooting directly towards the subject to straight up for bouncing light of the ceiling). There is a switch at the back to turn it on and a light which goes ... ...of the flash is adjustable - this is where you may have problems though if you don't have the manual as some of the power settings are denoted in colours which if you don't have the manual, you don't know what they represent. There is a button to trigger the flash separately from using the camera as a trigger (this is good for tesing if it's working!) Takes AA batteries - easy to get hold of. Has a 'lock' lever which can be used to secure it to the ...

Finally! A comfortable camera backpack!
Advantages: Very comfy, ample space for lenses, room for personal effects Disadvantages: Not laptop-suitable, fabric absorbs liquids too easily
...RANGE OF TERRAINS - Kata has thought more about the use of its product and has accepted that it will be used over different terrains and perhaps, walking long distances. For this, Kata has provided very solid but yet comfortable padding on the on the bag so its soft on your back. And also, they have provided a waterproof coat that goes over your bag for weather that is raining heavily; this will protect your bag from getting wet. I have used ... ...keep the front side of the bag dry! I know that other major camera backpack manufacturers do not include this. The straps are also very well padded so it doesn't dig into your shoulders even if you've packed your bag with heavy items, it still feels quite light. I'd packed my bag with quite few heavy items, on a bike ride for 3 hours and it still felt light afterwards. Which is a testament to the quality of the build. It also includes a chest and ...

Verry good tripod ... without the original ballhead
Advantages: light, stable, good construction Disadvantages: ball head not usable
this tripod is a good choice for hiking or on travel. Its just its head too light and impractical. I have an adapter that allows you to mount any photo ballhead on this tripod : http://pouypouy.blogspot.com/2009/06/how-to-adapt-photo-ballhead-on.html # the locking legs system is simple, safe and quick # the mounting / down / locking system of the central column is simple, good stop, without crank # the low-angle leg setting can autorize to put the ... ...is stable with a load of 2 or 3kg, without risk of camera fall down The bad side of this choice is its video ballhead: polycarbonate, the locking system does not take the load of 2 kg (it's normal : tripod is sold for a maximum load of 1 kg ), especially in vertical position (portrait). ...

Being a flasher can be hard work!
Advantages: Inexpensive, useful and fun to learn with. Disadvantages: Requires some knowledge to use and has its limitations (see review)
...the fact that the old Minolta flashes do fit the Sony hot shoe and although they will not work TTL (through the lens) you can use them in manual mode, for knowledgeable photographers this should not pose a problem but for the less knowledgeable it may take a bit of getting used to. The Minolta 5400HS used to be a very popular flash with Minolta users and now that Sony have taken over the Minolta branding it can as I say be used on Sony`s. The TTL ... ...correct exposure but with the Minolta you need to set these things for yourself. The cheapest Sony flash unit will set you back nearly £200 with the most expensive one coming in around the £400 mark. This older Minolta flash can be purchased new for about £70 if you can find one but there is the second hand option, I have seen several for sale lately around the £40 mark and they are a very good flash to have at that price and even though it will ...

The Gorillapod is really lightweight and fantastically versatile!
Advantages: Lightweight and extremly versatile. Brilliant for walking and other outdoor activities. Disadvantages: Slightly stiff joints compared to the compact camera version, and a bit bulky (relativly speaking)
I chose the Gorillapod over other mini tripods as it was lightweight and clearly a very clever design. Rather then simply shrinking a normal tripod design and hoping that it still works (having tried a few they generally don't), the designers went back to the drawing board on this one, dumping the traditional telescopic legs for extremely bendy legs with lots of rubberised joints. They have used a decent tough plastic material, which keeps it lightweight ... ...walking, as it is lightweight and compact. Its brilliant and innovative design allows you to use this in many situations where conventional mini tripods would simply fail. You don't need to worry about finding an even surface to balance it on; any rock or wall is fine. You simply bend each of the legs to suit the location. The grippy rubberised knuckles even allow you to wrap the legs around fence posts, tree branches, signposts etc. The tripod fixes ...
