70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is a World Class lens

Advantages: + image quality, build quality, IS, AF
Disadvantages: really none, unless you can afford and warrant the 2.8 IS II

A fantastic Landscape an Wildlife Lens

Advantages: Fantastic zoom range, exceptional image quality
Disadvantages: Heavy to carry, difficult to hand hold at 500mm in low light.
