Before I made my final decision I took my camera to my local cameral shop so I could actually try out the lens on my camera. Having satisfied myself that this was the right lens for me, I then shopped around for the lowest price and my local cameral shop agreed to price match! I managed to get my lens for £280. The sigma lens is quite heavy to carry around, but then this is a very versatile lens allowing you to take good wide angled and zoom shots with one lens. The diameter is quite large and with so much expensive glass exposed I recommend you use a filter. I recently dropped my camera and the filter smashed. However without the filter it could have been my lens that smashed! Ef 50 1.8 II Advantages: Cheap, great image quality, fast (aperture) Disadvantages: Bad focus motor. Noisy and slow (focus). Plastic build This lens is the first prime I ever bought. I was looking at primes because they produce better quality images and are faster than zooms, though less practical. I saw that 130$ lens (brand new!) ... I gave it a shot, saying to myself: -well I'll try this out and if I don't like primes or if this turns out to be a bad lens, i'll loose only 130$. I also believed at the time that 130$ brand new lenses cannot produce quality images. Nikon doesn't have ... ...of my favourite. It doesn't produce image as nice as my 85mm (also reviewed here on ciao), but for the price, it is unbeatable. Apart from beeing extremely fast (compared to zooms anyway), it is SHARP (well it's a prime...) and I also noticed better contrast (at least a more pleasing effect to my eye) in my image (compared to my 17-40L). Best lens I have Advantages: Perfect picture quality, fast and silent Disadvantages: Prime... Zoom and Dezoom with your feet I bought this lens to do portrait work but then I find myself using it more and more for every kind of pictures, compressed landscape, flower, nature, anything really. The quality of the pictures is just too great to miss. This lens is well balanced on a 40d (it would be on a rebel also). It doesn't feel too big or too small. You have USM focus, which means fast and silent. The size of the focus ring is good, you won't have difficulty using it in ... ...metal and it does not feel cheap at all. I've had it for 1 year and There is no dust at all in the lens. I use this on a 40d, and I usually have to back up a little to take the pictures, it is a little long. For landscape or cityscape photographers Advantages: Picture quality, seal, durability, L Disadvantages: Little heavy, ...life. It is compatible with every canon cameras, weather sealed (you can shoot in the rain with it if you use it with a 1 series camera) and unbreakable. Just hold one, you'll see what I mean. The nikon 50mm 1.8 - a fantastic portrait lens Advantages: great quality, low price, prime Disadvantages: none As anyone interested in photography will know - lenses don't come cheap, especially quality lens, except this one. The 50mm 1.8 has a reputation for quality at a reasonable price and it's a reputation well deserved. Yes the 50mm is a 'small' lens but it's a prime lens. Some may find that the need for them to move forwards or backwards to get the correct composition for a photograph is too irritating to make the purchase worthwhile over that of a ... ...price makes that an opinion that I beg to differ. If you shoot portraits, or are looking to start then the 50mm 1.8 will prove an invaluable piece of equipment, but it's uses are not limited to portraits only. At 1.8 the 50mm is a fast lens however it dies have a counterpart - the 50mm 1.4. The 1.4 is, by comparison, alot more expensive and unless you know you will need exceptionally fast glass the 1.8 is probably a better value purchase. The lens ...
