Perfect match for Canon 400d SLR
Advantages: Image sharpness, constant f2.8 aperture, cost Disadvantages: Some distortion at widest setting, motor noise
...expensive please! The Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 soon became a front runner from the scraps of user comments I found on the web. Hopefully my review below can fill in the gaps for other potential purchasers.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
Range 17-50mm (on 400d: 27-80mm)
Aperture f2.8 to f32
Physical Length at 17mm - 9cm
Physical Length at 50mm - 12cm
No USM or Image Stabilisation
No macro mode
Zoom lock switch prevents barrel movement when stored
Filter diameter ... ...THE NAME
You could accuse Tamron of just trying to cram in every letter of the alphabet and they have done a good job, but it does mean something. The 2.8 obviously refers to the maximum f2.8 aperture, constant throughout the whole focal range. XR, LD and ASP (aspherical) refer to the glass elements having characteristics to reduce aberration and distortions. To the normal user this boils down to good optical quality in an unusually compact design.

Cant Be Good at Everything
Advantages: Light One Lens Solution Disadvantages: Soft edges at wide end
As a novie in the world of DSLR I bought this lens as its focal lenth meant I could lessen the risk of getting dust on my cameras sensor through lens changing. I also wanted a lens that would limit the amount of kit I needed when taking my camera on a trip and this made this lens ideal.
This lens feels well built and it was deveoped especially for digital ameras thus the Di rating. It is reasonably light and smalland can focus in fairly low light ... ...in a formal setting.
However the lens may have a wide focal range but the quality of the images throughout the range differs a lot.At the wide end of the lens the corners of the image has very soft foucsing making this lens not suitable for landscape, and really making the lens a usable 50-200mm. At £250 this i not too expensive a lens but, if your willing to take the risk of getting dust on your sensor and dont mind changing lenses often your money ...

Tamron is best for tight budget
Advantages: Versatile, good range and great if you're constantly on the move. Disadvantages: A bit too slow, not as sharp but will improve when you know its habits.
I bought my Tamron 28-300mm lens from Jessops, it was on offer at the time, I think I only paid £199. I've used it for a number of different shooting scenarios because of its flexibility regarding wide angle and zoom. Pros:
I really like the range. It gives me most of what I need in one lens so I can take it with me on holiday and not have to worry about packing three different lenses. It doubles as a macro as well due to the zoom length and the ... ...this lens with my Canon 400D SLR which I had bought about a year earlier and I've used it predominantly for wildlife. It's been with me to Mull, Scotland, Prague, Venice and its been very handy for switching quickly from street shots to long shots.
Cons:
Well, given the Canon 400D is heavy (for me anyway - I'm only 5ft 3), this makes the body even heavier. At times, I also felt the zoom ring was quite sticky and wouldn't focus if I was a tad too ...

A must have lens for any photographer
Advantages: A lens for all photographers Disadvantages: none
...more expensive lenses. Tamron have produced a lens that is not going to break the bank to buy and is not going to give you aches and pains carrying it around all day. I took some shots of a jackdaw in the distance and the sharpness of the image it captured was far more than i was expecting. It comes complete with a close up setting which although some would say it is not true macro it does give you the option to get a close up shot. Which is more ... ...have taken this in my camera bag for an all day nature walk i had planed for the last few weeks. The weight of the lens was unnoticeable whilst carrying the bag for most of the day. The ease at which it fits onto the camera body really helps if you want to get that lovely shot of some form of wildlife you have spent time sneaking up on. There is no vignetting that can happen with some lenses even when using flash. I have been putting this lens through ...

Tamron
Advantages: Good Value Product Disadvantages: Not many
This is a good quality product that offers good value for money in the very short term. Although as with most products of this type, the value will deteriorate over time and should be able to get a cheaper version next year. It's a great device with plenty of features that I would highly recommend. This really is a wonderful piece of kit that should go well with many accessories because it really looks good. After using this product for a few months ...
