Perfect match for Canon 400d SLR
Advantages: Image sharpness, constant f2.8 aperture, cost Disadvantages: Some distortion at widest setting, motor noise
...expensive please! The Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 soon became a front runner from the scraps of user comments I found on the web. Hopefully my review below can fill in the gaps for other potential purchasers.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
Range 17-50mm (on 400d: 27-80mm)
Aperture f2.8 to f32
Physical Length at 17mm - 9cm
Physical Length at 50mm - 12cm
No USM or Image Stabilisation
No macro mode
Zoom lock switch prevents barrel movement when stored
Filter diameter ... ...THE NAME
You could accuse Tamron of just trying to cram in every letter of the alphabet and they have done a good job, but it does mean something. The 2.8 obviously refers to the maximum f2.8 aperture, constant throughout the whole focal range. XR, LD and ASP (aspherical) refer to the glass elements having characteristics to reduce aberration and distortions. To the normal user this boils down to good optical quality in an unusually compact design.

Great 2nd Lens
Advantages: Fast Focus, well built, reliable excellent performance all round Disadvantages: Heavy, you will need a tripod
...and fits on both the Sony a-mount as well as the Konica Minolta mount. Zooming is done through a large in the middle and if you are focusing manually it is through a front ring. Again there is no distance indicator for the focus ring but that is only useful for nerds as you will not be able to focus and measure distance at the same time unless you want to get a tape out to check!
The longest zoom is at 300mm. Now bear in mind that digital SLR cameras ... ...the Sony a-100 has a 1.5 crop factor, that means the lens is effectively a longest zoom of 450mm. With that you can take a good picture of a car number plate from about 450 meters away (500 yards in old money).
The zoom is fast enough for sports like football where you can take quality shots from all accross the field. It is also very good for the bird watchers out there! I never thought I could enthusiasticly put a a camera on a tripod and use ...

The nikon 70-200mm F2.8 VR, top-of-the-line
Advantages: Beautiful bokeh, tack-sharp, vibration reduction, easy to use, many useful accessories Disadvantages: heavy, expensive, slight vignetting, prone to flaring
...compared to the more traditional Nikon systems. For instance, from 1995 they offered image stabilisation in their lenses, suddenly opening up a whole world of possibilities for photographers. Using image stabilisation, it became possible to use a lens at slower shutterspeeds, as the lens automatically would correct minor vibrations. It took Nikon a number of years, until 2001 to be exact, to respond with their own version of this technology. The ... ...lens to be sure, but Nikon owners really started to get excited at the announcement of the AF-S 70-200 F2.8 VR. This lens, a successor of a highly regarded line of professional lenses, turned out to be spectacular: the image stabila… sorry, the vibration reduction was possibly even more effective than Canon's and the image quality… Well, I am going to discuss that right now! ---Image quality--- The 70-200 VR is a tack-sharp lens, as you would expect ...

The Canon 10-20mm EF-S lens, perfect for landscapes.
Advantages: Excellent quality pictures, Useful wide angle range. Good build quality. Disadvantages: No lens hood, Not compatible with all EOS cameras
Introduction
The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-f4.5 USM lens is a high quality wide-angle zoom lens that is ideal for landscape, architectural and interior photography.
It is designed to be used with all Canon EOS cameras with an APS-C sized censor and an EF-S lens mount, it cannot be used with Canon full frame or film cameras, also some older EOS models will not accept this lens either.
To see if your camera is compatible with this lens, check ... ...lot with this, but the Canon lens has very little chromatic aberration at all, and it is not noticeable on most pictures, even where it is present it is very minor and you would have to enlarge the picture quite a lot to even see it, which is quite impressive.
Lens Flare
Lens flare happens when the sun strikes the front element of a lens and causes reflections inside the lens, The elements in this lens have a "super spectra coating" which ...
