...The author, CammieMcGovern, is the mother of 4 boys, one of whom is autistic. She has also done a lot of work for autistic societies and therefore has the background knowledge to be able to portray the emotions of parents of similarly disabled children, and the children themselves.
I feel that I learnt a lot about autism, and the different ways it can affect lives, by reading this book. I believe that was the author’s intention, as she knows that fears about this disability could isolate her son, even more than the disability itself.
She describes how the “roadblocks” in the brains of autistic children are set in different places. She is aware that because of the film Rainman, starring Dustin Hoffman, that some think of autism as producing mathematical geniuses, but this film only showed one possible outcome. In Eye Contact...

...Shriver's written style is engaging because it is so realistic and accurate, especially regarding thoughts that we would often rather keep to ourselves. This means that as we read, we cannot help but be engaged with the characters.
Irina McGovern faces a romantic choice in the first chapter, the outcome of which determines the direction in which her life will head, which seems to be connected to the man and therefore style of relationship that she chooses. From then on, the novel follows a parallel universe structure in which she either remains with her supportive partner or begins a new life with a more spontaneous man. So far, very similar to the hit film 'Sliding Doors'.
