Some time ago in a galaxy far far away…came the V8 treaty…read on intrepid explorers to find out the origins of this historic agreement and how, even today you can find out what aliens taste like and save a galaxy, by sampling the V8!
V8 is the name of an intergalactic pact between warring alien factions 3,000,000,000,000 light years from earth. After years of not blending together very well the race of CELERY, from planet…Zob, suggested ... ...our time.
At that time the TOMATOES from Greenplantius had destroyed many of the taste buds that the other races thrived upon. But they could not claim outright victory as the other races adopted gorilla tactics. Yes, that’s right, they ran around earthy, vegetation naked! Arrrgh! But that’s another story…
So it was to be that a great meeting was held between the factions.

V8 is the name of an intergalactic pact between warring alien factions 3,000,000,000,000 light years from earth. After years of not blending together very well the race of CELERY, from planet…Zob, suggested a truce and talks started aimed at creating peace in our time.
The obese TOMATOES came heavily represented The chief CELERY(arian?) presided over the talks They were joined by: The horrific BEETROOTS who tainted and spoiled everything they touched The weak LETTUCE’s who were green with envy at TOMATOES domination The PARSLEY tribe that were distributed…sparsely The giants of CARROT WATERCRESS the demon invaders of the planet Teeth And finally the strong and irrepressible SPINACH race
This unlikely bunch of negotiators mixed awkwardly for a while drinking WATER and playing the SALT and PEPPER game until, finally, a merger seemed almost within reach. At the last minute an arbitration agent from a distant land swooped in to save the day. Forever this agent will be known lovingly as:
The TOMATOES demand for 100% domination of the galaxy fell on deaf ears but after much toing and froing they settled for 82% of the galaxy with the other factions making up another 13% which left plenty (5% actually) for drinking water and playing the salt and paper game.
The treaty was known as V8 to celebrate the 8 factions that combined. But the truce is still uneasy to this day. Envoys were sent to the far reaches of the universe to test public opinion on the treaty…and the views received to date have been worryingly mixed. The public in worlds all over the universe either adore the V8 or they detest it.
The envoys even tried to package the message in different ways and made it available in all large supermarkets and small stores!
The 330ml canister V8 seemed popular at first and the race of humans even paid around 65p for this but they were not convinced. So the envoys created the 500ml glass bottle which went for around £1.20 but still the masses would not believe the message.
Unknown to our envoys at this time a habit of humans to vary prices considerably had delayed the uptake of the message. And they were further dismayed to discover that most places that stocked the message never even STORED IT IN THE FRIDGE!!!
HOW could they not understand and abide by the 3 main commandments of the V8
Thou shall get “best results serve chilled” Thou shall “shake before serving” Thou shall “refrigerate after opening”
But all is not lost my friends. Today, an enterprise named CIAO offers us hope of saving the V8. Our contact inside the organisation (Dave) offers the following code that I cannot decipher. I hope that the humans can understand it and embrace the V8 before war once more blights our galaxy…
Dave’s code:
“I really like V8 and often buy a bottle or can of it in place of some of my normal daily helpings of vegetables. However most places don’t put it in the fridge so it is hard to drink at lunchtime! Not everyone likes it. The taste is not very smooth, in fact this drink is quite spicy and would be great in a Bloody Mary! It has no added preservatives and many health food stores stock it as well as local shops and supermarkets. The following is its nutritional table:
Energy 14kcal Protein 0.8g Carb 3.1g (of which sugars 3.1g) Fat 0.1g Fibre 0.7g Sodium 0.3g Vitamin A 15% RDA
I actually think that V8 makes me feel better the next morning if I’ve had one too many beers the night before. If I remember, I drink before I go to bed and it helps me feel energetic the next morning”
Advantages: Very healthy and useful Disadvantages: Not to everyone's taste
WHY DID I BUY IT?
I try to follow govt guidelines (5 different fruit or veg a day), but really, I have been using this for years. I like it, but read on even if you don't, because you don't have to drink it!
WHAT IS IT?
Campbell's' V8 100% vegetable juice is a drink (but see below). The eponymous eight veg are: tomato, carrot, beetroot, watercress, celery, parsley and spinach. No artificial preservatives or colours, but there is added salt and ... ...salt I am a bit cross about the added salt: 0.60g per 100ml. Carbs 3.2g per 100 ml.
19 calories per 100 ml.
No fat, as to the spices, pepper maybe? AVAILABILITY AND PRICE
Sainsburys, Waitrose, Tesco, health food shops. It can be hard to find even in shops that stock it. Sometimes it's on the fruit juice shelf, sometimes among the breakfast items in larger Sainsburys. It's not that cheap: slightly more expensive than basic fruit juices. Depending ...

Advantages: It's SOooo healthy Disadvantages: Supermakets put it on the top shelf...no idea why, they just do.
...packaging that V8 was a Campbells product (mainly known for supplying Andy Warhol with source material for one of his screen prints…and the soup isn’t bad either).
Nowadays, while the stuff is still made by Campbell Grocery Products Ltd in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, you have to look pretty hard to find that name on the pack. It’s produced in the USA too, but at the risk of offending some of our American visitors, and at the SERIOUS risk of being bombarded ... ...concentrate on the UK version. My decision was quite easy to reach, as some of the natty products which sport the V8 name are not available in dear old blighty just yet. If this tickles your interest glands, why not pop over to www.v8juice.com, where all will be revealed!
So. Back to the suitably studious and sober study of the product at hand.
V8 tends to be a ‘top shelf’ kind of drink. Not, as you might imagine, of a pornographic or ‘adult’ nature, ...

Advantages: tasty AND healthy! Disadvantages: none
...I said, it was the Campbells name. And the packaging isn't too bad either - the green and black V* logo on a white background adorned with pictures of the various fruits contained within.
You'll be happy to know that this stuff is nice and healthy for you - with only around 70 calories in a 330ml can, you can't complain. Less than 0.5g fat and 15% of your RDA of vitamin A add to the benefits of the drink.
The benefits are all very well, but how ... ...benefit? Answer: not at all. When opening the can, a strong smell of tomatoes hits you (ok, I take it back - anyone who can't stand tomato juice is going to hate it). The drink is thick and a reddish-orange colour, due to the vast quantities of tomatoes and carrots it contains.
As for taste...it's divine! The tomato taste hits you first, followed by the carrot and beetroot and the others can be tasted after you swallow. Except the lettuce. Why they ...

Advantages: an acquired taste Disadvantages: not cheap
This is one of those things that you either love it or hate it. I don’t know anyone who kind of likes it, or thinks its ok, it’s like marmite in that respect. This is primarily tomato juice with a few added extras, seven to be precise, including celery, and parsley, which I think gives it its distinctive taste, and is the deciding factor in wether you are a lover or a hater. It’s a very bitter after taste and it puts some people off. The ingredients ... ...parsley.
V8 is not a cheap drink, it is around 55p for a 330ml can or £1.09, for a 500ml bottle, as you can see the cans work out cheaper which I have not been able to work out, usually the more you buy of something, the cheaper it gets. I have looked on the web for homemade style V8 recipes, in order to save money, of which there are several. Here is one below.
