Voltaire - very candid in Candide

Advantages: Satire as an art form!
Disadvantages: Translations not always great, targets of some satire not recognisable.

...form of a novel. Candide is the illegitamate son of a German baron, brought up in a castle and tutored by Pangloss. Candide falls in love with the baron's daughter, who then kicks him out of the castle. He's then conscripted into the Bulgarian army, escapes and goes to Holland, where he meets Pangloss and Cunégonde again and things progress from there.

Candide is usually seen as a satire - on many different things. It's a social satire, ...
...ridicule. For much of Candide it is used as a kind of mantra, yet it's undermined throughout by this very repetition. Candide himself becomes increasingly aware that the statement is untrue, too - from the very first chapter, where the hero (Candide) is thrown out of the castle, everything that follows is a conflict between hope and despair. For the reader, each time Candide experiences something akin to this (and believe me, he does - a lot), it's ... more

...experiential/applied, was of high value. Candide was a student more than anything else, although in the course of the story, he holds many roles. Others who appear include Pangloss, the know-it-all philosophy teacher; Cunegonde, Candide's on-again, off-again love interest (who has her own set of adventures reported); Martin, another scholar (this one rather hopeless, in more ways than one); various other characters including Jewish merchants, Grand ...
...other bit players. Candide travels all across Europe, from Westphalia through the Latin countries, ending up finally in Constantinople. No stone is unturned to expose the foibles of the locals, the problems of the travelers, and questionable underside of all society as they move from place to place, culture to culture, and crisis to crisis. Ultimately, the plot is not as important as the characters and characterisations -- for a book written in the ...

Voluptuous Voltaire in hysterical heaven

Advantages: Funny, funny, funny and excellently written
Disadvantages: Old so may not be appreciated by some

Candide by Voltaire is an absolute classic that transcends time. It was written in the 18th century and, I imagine, was as funny then, as it is now! It is one of the books you get for a £1 out of Bargain Books or such like - a Wordsworth classic and, as I am not a great reader of classic fiction, I was more than a bit hesitant at starting it. How wrong could I be? Once started, I could not put it down and I finished it off in one night (160 odd ...
...story concerns the hero - Candide - and his series of adventures and misadventures after he is exiled from his home after engaging in activities of a sexual nature with Cunegonde, the Baron's daughter. It is a philosophical novel, interspersed with well observed anecdotes, some philosophical matters of course and an array of side-splittingly hilarious predicaments and occurences. Read the first chapter in the shop (it's only 3 pages). If you don't ...

...a candid young man called Candide who pursues his childhood love (Cunegonde) to the end of the earth despite her infidelity and ugliness. On his journeys he comes across all sorts of disasters and underhand dealings but remains disturbingly naïve. The book is essentially an attack on the philosophy of optimism, something which Candide continues to subscribe to despite his plight. ...

Candide by Voltaire

Advantages: Witty and insightful novel
Disadvantages: very short

Candide is subtitled optimism and this is a source of great irony throughout the novel. Though Voltaire himself was said to have thought the peice as a flimsy little exercise, it is extremely entertaining for the modern audience. The premise behind this story is that a young man, named Candide is taught to believe in the premise "All is for the best, in the best of all possible worlds". Voltaire then sets out to show just how wrong this is. As Candide ...
...loves with terrible atrocities happening all around him, he sticks with this philosophy. The genius of this novel, is in Voltaire's ability to create agonising twists and turns for his protagonist whilst keeping his tongue firmly in his cheek. The ending in particular shows one of the great final ironic statements in literature, up there with Joseph Heller's Catch 22. Highly Recommended. ...

eastern gags

Advantages: laughs galore
Disadvantages: slow

This tale is slightly more serious (but not much) than Voltaire?s more famous work ?Candide?. It takes place in the middle east and concerns a young man Zadig whose intellect continually gets him into trouble and who is continually duped by women. The book?s main drive comes in the final chapters where Voltaire addresses the concept of Providentialism. This, though partially accepted, is rejected in line with Voltaire?s idea that all systematic beliefs should be rejected until they are subjected to empirical testing. It nevertheless remains an interesting work, but, for me, forever in the shadow of ?Candide?. ...

speed and passion

Advantages: speed, passion, action
Disadvantages: none

This is a highly entertaining work written by Abbe Prevost. It is far superior to his other main "Story of a modern Greek" and is after Lesage's work "Gil Blas" one of the first examples of the "picaresque" in French literature. It is a veritable roller-coaster ride of a story never resting or stopping and reminds one of that other great work of french literature Voltaire's "Candide" in its speed and passion. It concerns a Chevalier and his quest to pursue his loved one who is continually unfaithful, but he seeks her nevertheless. I recommend it to be read as a fine example of a speedy and fast story, which almost preempts similar cinematic styles. ...
