Digital cameras are now entering the mainstream thanks to a rash of new products and competitive pricing, but such technology does not suit all users. Limited resolution and...
more...limitations on the number of shots that cameras can hold are just two of the problems common to digital photography, and as a result this technology is only cautiously being embraced. Hence, Canon is trying to tempt users with an interesting alternative in the form of the CanoScan 2700F. This is a shoebox-sized external unit that communicates to the host PC via a supplied SCSI card. The CanoScan is a full color image scanner, but has been designed specifically for the needs of photographers. Rather than using a sheet-fed or flatbed scanning mechanism, the CanoScan has been designed solely to scan photographs. This does not, however, mean that the unit is used to scan developed photographic prints. Instead the unit can scan developed 35mm slides, film negatives or IX240 film. However, you can't use unprocessed 35mm film; you will need to develop films into fixed negatives.

This is a film scanner I bought second hand quite a year ago. It was fairly priced and I thought of giving it a go. The first problems occured when I had to set up the SCSI card which took some time, but was worth doing, if you really are into computers.

SInce this is a discontinued item, there are no drivers for Windows XP (unless someone knows something that I do not and enlight us), I had to set up my computer with 2 different Operating Systems. Windows 98 just for the scanenr and XP for all the other applications. It is alright, it does not do you much of a hassle.

So the scanner is a decent piece of equipment, scanning, both negatives and positives (transparencies) as well as APS film, provided that you buy the adaptor which I do not hold. It can scan framed slides as well.

The quality of scan in general terms has been exceptional with the exception of a few cases where it did not exactly match the colour of a print. But then you see this might had been adjusted when the print was made and not the actual negativce being developed.

The menu on the scaner (I mean software) the scanner all it has is an on/off switch as shown on the picture, is basic. There are some things you can do like, colour balance, contrast and brightness but I am not 100% confident yet.

The manual is veeeeeeeeeeeeerryyyy long and I do not have the time to read it all in detail. I have read all the things I needed but I still think that there is room for improvement for all of us who are not that familiar with the way colours work when scanning.

If there is something else you need me to comment on, I will be more than happy to do so
