This is the scanner we purchased for the kids to use in their school work and playing around with photos and graphics. It cost £35 as we bought it from a returned goods store; it’s normally around the £50 mark. It is perfect for them and the things they will be doing with it.
Canon is a well known brand and the scanner is fairly well made although perhaps a little on the light side, but it doesn’t feel particularly insubstantial or flimsy. It has stood up so far to the sometimes rough handling it receives. It is finished in Canons usual two tone grey and black. Its dimensions are width x depth x height: 10.2 x 18.7 x 3.3 inches (25.9 cm x 47.4 cm x 8.3 cm) and it weighs 5.6 lbs (2.6 kg). The maximum input paper size is 216 x 297 mm (A4)
On the front are 7 buttons; 1 each to copy, scan, e-mail and 4 related to PDF files. One of the main reasons we wanted this particular model was its Z-Lid expansion top. This can lift up about 1 inch vertically so you can put in thick items such as text books and still get really good copies: You can even copy or scan thick items that do not lie flat on the scanner bed such as jewellery. You can choose colour or black and white for the scan result.
Its resolution is excellent and greatly in excess of their requirements. It delivers a maximum colour dpi resolution of 4800 x 9600, 8-bit (256 grey levels) and 48-bit colour. It makes a very good job of scanning photographs and magazine articles as well as books. You also get software that can alter and retouch images (QARE level 3) and it comes with film adaptor unit for up to 6x 35 mm film strip and 4x 35 mm mounted slides. We haven’t as yet used the film adapters on this scanner as we use a different one for those jobs.
What's in the box • CanoScan 4400F • AC Adapter • USB Cable • Film Guides: 35mm (negatives) and 35mm (mounted slides) • Documentation kit • Setup Software & User's Guide CD-ROM • Quick Start Guide • Registration Card • Warranty Card
This is a very easy scanner to use and is perfect for scanning information from text books and library books. Because you are left with an editable document it is ideal for children’s school and college work. Its tough enough to withstand the sometimes indelicate handling it gets and is a neat and tidy machine. Even at £50 it is quite reasonable for the standard of scans you get but I do wonder why it was returned as there is nothing wrong with how it works. .
