The canon Canoscan 8600F are best suited for reflective scanning and film of greater size that 35mm.
For large format and medium format film it is quite good actually and should allow you to make large print from your scan.
Images are a tad soft straight from the scanner but respond well to USM sharpening.
For regular 35mm film scans will be good for smaller prints and work just fine if your main goal is to use your images for web use and digital albums.

Film holders for most formats are included.
Silverfast LE scanner software included and gives you more control over scan quality

If I sum up:
The 8600F is not up to the discontinued Canon 9950F or the new Epson V700 but it is also a great bit cheaper and Nice for its price!
Anyhow if your plans are to produce high quality gallery prints, the I suggest that you shop for a dedicated film scanner instead.
