I bought this item about a year and a half ago, for about £100 from an online company that is now owned by John Lewis.

Main features:

Up to 600 x 1200 dpi resolution for normal scans - This is good enough but you might expect a little more for the money.
Built-in film adapter unit (1200 x 1200 dpi) – light built into lid, and plastic template provided.
42-bit colour depth – Easily good enough.
One touch button scanning – Useful button on the front of the scanner.

This scanner was at the time meant to be good, hence the price, now the price has fallen and I would still say could be lower before beating competition at similar prices.

Setting up is very easy via a USB lead, drivers included. Also uses a power adapter as I guess the light draws too much current for the lead. Its quite bulky for an A4 scanner so you need a space more like the size of an A3 piece of paper. The software provided looks as if it should be good, only used the software that allows the one touch scan and the determining the scan dpi, area of scan settings etc. Had a scaled down version of Adobe Photoshop with it, which if its anything like the full version should be all you would ever need.

Ease of use is brilliant, just hit the button at the front, place your picture on the scanner (3D objects can be done as lid is removable), the software automatically pops up on your screen and all is left is to plug in the dpi and area (more settings can be changed if needed i.e. contrast, brightness, levels of RGB). Once set up its previews and scans your image very quickly (unless dpi very high or image very large, scanning normally takes less than a minute)

The quality of the scan is very good, images produced are very realistic, full colour, and hardly any quality (if any) lost from the original, only limiting factor will be your printer.

Extras – the negative scan was the reason I bought this over the cheaper and just as good alternatives, but to be honest was a waste of money, quality of scan was poor and had trouble picking up on the white (clear) areas of the negative. This could be corrected using image manipulation in Photoshop but wasn’t worth the effort. If scanning negatives is what you want, its worth investing in a proper negative scanner.
If you want to just scan some negatives for a bit of fun the quality is acceptable and this becomes a very cheap way of doing so.

Overall at its current lower price I would expect there to be some better scanners around for the same money, but this one certainly does the job, and if you want to dabble with some old negatives then this could be for you.
