The Canon CanoScan is a great all-round flatbed scanner. It is a good size (25cm x 36cm x 4cm) to enable all regular scanning, whilst not taking up unnecessary desk space. It has a resolution of 4800dpi x 4800 dpi, which results in great quality scans, of both black and white or colour documents/images.
Whilst I have been rather let down by other scanners, this one is really easy to use and gives fantastic results. It is easy to scan in regular sheets/photos, but the lid also allows you to scan notebooks etc. Although other scanners I have used have allowed you to do this, the results have not been so good; often having the lid slightly ajar results in bleached patches of the scanned document, due to light getting in. However, I have personally not suffered any problems like that with this scanner.
When scanning documents, text comes out clear; when scanning photos, the colours are a good representation and very accurate and vivid. Unlike many other scanners, this one also seems to be quite a bit faster, scanning detailed A4 items in around 10 seconds. On top of this, a great bonus is that there is no need to wait around while it warms up - something I usually find rather frustrating when wanting something in a hurry! Aside from being quick, it is also reasonably quiet.
The buttons on the scanner are simple to understand and enable operations to be completed with just one click - for example scanning, copying, emailing or making PDF files. The 'quick scan' function is really useful.
The software supplied is much more detailed than that given by many other manufacturers. The pack includes 'MP Navigator EX', ScanGear and ArcSoft PhotoStudio. It is reasonably easy to use and provides lots of features; having said this, most people have their own software (e.g. Photoshop) which they prefer to use for the majority of operations. The scanner comes with a USB for an easy and portable connection.
The scanner is currently retailing for around £60-£70, depending on where you look. I believe this a reasonable price for those wanting a high quality scanner, and for those who will use it regularly. For those wanting a more basic functioning with not so regular use, or for those with a lack of space, then alternative all-in-one printer/scanner/copier machines may be more effective and better value for money. Definitely worth it though for those who want the best results and will get regular use out of it. Lots of additional features and a great-looking product.
