I'm not one for technical reviews, simply because i don't have enough technical experience to consider myself capable to write them. So be warned, this is a users only review, which i hope can be helpful all the same.
I've had this scanner for about 3 years now. I bought it shortly after i had my first
internet connection. Seeing as i live in a remote forest zone in the south of France, it's taken a while to get DSL here, the last villages are still being installed at the moment. The zone should be 95% covered my July. Hurray!

The scanner came with a Cd, and was simple to install. There are two cables, one from the scanner to the computer, and the other is the mains plug, so you can't get more simple than that. It has three function buttons on the front of it;
copy - to simply copy what you place in the scanner.
scan - this scans a copy into your computer, which you can modify or copy later.
e-mail - this sends your scan to the e-mail address you wish.
It's as simple as that!
It works under Windows xp. The advantages of this scanner compared to the others i saw, was firstly, the price, i paid 39€ (or around 25 pounds), and the fact that it is capable of lifting the lid so that you can copy thicker documents and even books.

I use the "copy" function when i need a copy fast, and don't have time to scan it first
The "scan" function I use regularly, especially for photos, as i don't yet have a numeric camera. I get my films developed, scan the photos, and put them on Cd so that we get real "king size" photos (on a 72cm screen). The results are excellent, seeing as my camera is not only not numeric, but also the cheapest "auto focus" i came about 15 years ago! I was really surprised to have such clear photos.
I often send photos or documents via e-mail too, it's so simple to just send what's in the scanner, in an ordinary e-mail format.

The definition is of 1200dpi by 2400dpi. There was a little base with it, to pop it up on its side, but i find this makes it unstable and pretty tricky to use standing. When i put my paper in the scanner, i have to hold it while closing the lid, with my fingers inside it! There is some good software package on the installation Cd - photobase and photostudio, which are pretty handy.
After installation you get ScanGear Toolbox on your computer. This allows you to use the controls on the screen instead of the buttons. I find that i never use this function, seeing as i have to lift the lid and put my document inside it, it's much faster to just press one of the three function buttons, rather than finding the program amongst all the others with my mouse...

Size wise, you'll need a space that measures 36cm by 25cm and it is 3cms thick.
I would definitely suggest this scanner to a first time user, like me, as it is just so simple, you can't go wrong, and the result is good. A good price too.
