I am finding a little more time to return to Ciao after a long absence. Will try and catch up with old friends. As to the writing side of things... well, I have few things to write about.. Now it's just a matter of finding the time... Derek

A few months ago my old Agfa Snapscan 1212 gave up the ghost. Not surprising because I've had it since… it's been that long I honestly can't remember! It connected to the computer via the parallel port and was slower than the M25 with just one lane open. Mind you, just like the M25 when I first used it I thought it was terrific!
It was in PCWorld that I first looked at the Canon LiDE35 - I'm afraid I wanted this machine so badly, I didn't shop around and bought it there and there. I loved its slim looks and the fact that it didn't need it's own power supply. It works directly from the USB connection.
The scanner was well packaged in a nice strong box with a carry handle that I found handy to keep it stored when it's not in use. The software was child's play to load and easy to understand. It also linked itself to my Photographic program so I can scan photos directly into it from the menu. But I found the quality of the scans were so good I did not need to alter them, only if I wanted them bigger or smaller. But if you don't have any photographic software on your computer, there is no need to worry because the LiDE35 comes with a copy of ArcSoft Photostudio, which is quite good.
I had not long fitted a USB2 port into my computer, so on first using the Canon, I was as happy as a pig in the old what-you-call-it when I scanned my first photograph. It was so fast and quiet compared to my old Agfa.
I then loaded the OmniPage program from the installation CD that enables the scanning of text documents directly in Word. When doing this, as with all text scanners, I needed to read through the scanned documents carefully because some letters was not recognised, especially if the fonts of the scanned documents were small. However, it seemed to be more accurate at this sort of scanning than my Agfa had been, and if I scanned larger text (size 12 upward) it was near perfect.
On the front of the machine were buttons that you could operate without touching the computer. Pressing the copy button (this scanned the image directly to the printer), scan button (standard scan into photo program), file button (saves file as a PDF document which can be read in a program such as Acrobat Reader), email button (scans document and opens an email with it as an attachment ready to send).
The Canon scans up to A4 size and works on standard USB1 as well as the faster USB2.
Other useful abilities this machine has is that it comes with a bracket that enables you to stand the scanner on end in an upright positions if you are short of desk space, scans to an ample 1200x2400dpi, 48bit input/output and operates on PC or Mac.
Included on the installation CD for windows and Macintosh were ScanGear CS, CanoScan Toolbox, ArcSoft Photostudio, Scansoft OmniPage SE, Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Thanks for reading..

Thanks - we've been thinking of buying one of these (they're currently on sale at PC World), and your review has made me feel much more confident about our choice :o)

I think my dad has this one, or did have until he got this snazzy all in one printer/scanner. Now the canon one lies about gathering dust. Philippa. x
