Advantages: Easy to install, High resolution, USB connection Disadvantages: My printer made it redundant
I've owned this scanner for about 6 months and found it to be a very good purchase over time -very few problems with it and it's also very simple to install! Simply plug it in to your USB port and let windows find the drivers (may be different for linux users!). You will need some picture editing software to use this, but there are good packages avaliable to be downloaded for free -I use picture publiser. Also it's a very sleek design so even though ... ...I have no objection to this.

In laymans terms this means that it's got more than enough detail to get complicated scans into the PC so long as they're in black ink or similar. The scanner often has problems reading pencil drawings however this is a problem universal in scanners so don't let it deter you. Also the USB means hopefully high speed (I'll come onto this later) and compatible with most PCs.
Easy of Use: One of the best points about this scanner is how easy it is to use. As I stated previously to install it you simply plug in the lead to your USB port (on the back usually or on the front of more modern PCs), load up windows and let it find the drivers for you. Picture scanning is also very simple -so much so that even my mum who isn't very confident at all with computers manages it easily! Using Picture Publisher (presumably similar for other packages) simply get a preview of the scan, and if it looks right then it will be scanned properly (taking more time than the preview but in more detail). From here you can edit out any blotches on the paper that you didn't want with basic picture editing skills and save it!
Speed: I've little to compare this to speedwise except my new printer (see below), but it takes approximately 4 seconds to preview a scan then 10-15 to scan it, which seems perfectly reasonable for the high detail with which it scans. Also unlike other pieces of hardware I own this doesn't take any time at all to get ready for use.
The only reason I replaced this scanner was after I bought an HP 1100 printer which can also scan/photocopy (albeit to less detail) thus there was no point the scanner taking up extra room. However in conclusion if you want a specialised high detail scanner then this is a really good bet :)
...a legal crack on the canon site which I got and it solved the problem.
All in all I have found the end result of using this product excellent.
And a key design is that it can stand on its side to save space and it can even scan while on its side with no problem in scan quality. ...

Manufacturer's product description
The CanoScan LiDE 80 Color Image Scanner has all the power and performance you need for scanning detailed images, copying documents and e-mailing your favorite photos - even preserving your original negatives. The resolution of the LiDE 80 scanner reaches up to an exceptional 2400 x 4800 dpi for film and photos with 48-bit color depth for over 281 trillion possible colors. Yes, trillion. You can scan in photos fast and easily, plus you can now digitize all of your favorite 35mm film negatives with the included Film Adapter Unit. The USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection lets you scan images fast, with previews available in under 10 seconds. Scan multiple photos at once to save even more time on large projects. "Multi-Scan mode" automatically scans all the pictures placed on the platen glass in a single pass, preparing a separate image file for each. It will even adjust any slightly misaligned photos. Additionally, the LiDE 80 scanner automatically removes many of the scratches and dust particles typically found on older photos.Canon scanner technology doesn't stop with performance. Convenience features include exclusive Z-Lid expansion top, which lifts up to 1-inch high and stays flat for scanning thick books and magazines. Most other scanner covers can only lift at an angle, so the scans can be incomplete or illegible. For easier operation, just one cable is needed for both power and data connection - no additional AC adapter is required. Four easy-access buttons help automate the scanning process, save images to PDF, e-mail items or simply make a copy of that important report. You can even save your images directly to CDs as easily as scan, click and burn. And last, but certainly not least, with a lid that has a stylish, aluminum spin-carved finish, the LiDE 80 scanner will look great on any desktop.
