With its high-tech metallic finish and sleek new styling, the CanoScan N656U USB Flatbed Scanner - at just over 2,5 cm high - looks incredible on any desktop. But great looks are...
more...just the beginning, since this scanner was also designed for exceptional performance as well. High-quality scans now come at a truly great price. The N656U scanner makes scanning simple. Connect the single USB/power cable to any compatible Mac or PC and you're ready to go. No separate power cord or bulky transformers are necessary. Push the convenient external scan button and scan photos, graphics, articles and more at a spectacular 600 x 1200 dpi. The scanner's 42-bit color capabilities give you a spectrum of more than four trillion possible colors for richer, more robust scans. And the software included helps you take advantage of it all, whether you want to optimize photos, manipulate images or simply integrate text or graphics into your projects. Canon's exclusive Z-Lid Expansion Top will change the way you scan bulky items, such as books and magazines. Many other scanner covers lift only at an angle and become uneven and awkward when scanning anything that isn't completely flat. The N656U scanner cover includes a special expansion hinge that lifts up to 2,5 cm vertically, allowing the lid to lie flat, creating the space needed for bulky items.

I paid £30 for this scanner a while ago, and I have never once regretted it. It has everything you need for personal (or even light commercial) use, wrapped up in a neat little package.

The first noticable thing about this scanner is how stylish it looks. With a sleek gray case with some silver metallic finishing, its looks won't let you down. And at only 1 inch thick and 1.5 kilos, it's the most portable flatbed scanner i've ever come across.

The second thing you'll notice is the lack of buttons. There's only one, but that's all you'll need once you see the Canon ScanGear Toolbox in action. It can Fax, Email, Print or Save your images at the click of a mouse, and once you teach it your preferences it will know exactly what to do. And if you have editing software installed like Photoshop, you can send your images directly there.

The resolution of this scanner is certainly not below par either, with a max of 1200dpi, although I have never used it! I find 150dpi to be adequate for printing photos, and at 300dpi, it's indistinguishable from the real thing. Scanning is fairly quick at these resolutions, an A4 image taking around 20 seconds at 150 and 40 at 300.

Now, on to special features. My favourite thing on this scanner has got to be the patented 'Z'-type hinge. It is really two hinges connected to a short peice of plastic, but it allows the lid of the scanner to lie perfectly flat up to two inches from the glass, allowing for perfect scanning of thick books or magazines.

Overall, an outstanding purchase that has served me well for a long time. I would recommend this scanner to anyone, it's great fun (who hasn't scanned their hand, really) and super-practical. Buy one today!
