...quality is superb from the Canon DC100, it does not cope quite so well in low light conditions. Whilst the spec does say it will operate in low light, the picture quality is dramatically reduced. Dependant on how you want use the camera, it should be noted that the DC100 does not have a zero light or infra red facility that is offered on some other manufacturers.

If you want a simple to use camera then this is the one. It covers everything from point and go, to being more adventurous. prices have significantly dropped for this unit and if you shop around prices are as low as £250. I purchased one of these units in January and found it to have a remarkable picture quality.

The advantages of the DC100 are its ease of use and its ability to record in true wide-screen. It should be noted that other products on the market may display a wide screen picture, but the recording is actually done in standard format. Another useful feature is a variable zoom speed, which can be set via 3 different pre-set speeds or a user variable speed. The pre set speeds can be useful if you tend to be a little heavy handed. Recording times vary depending upon the choice of 3 different quality of recording settings. The lowest setting will give a recording time of 45mins per disc. Whilst there is a noticeable depreciation of picture quality, the results are still clear and of good quality. The other two setting allow a recording time of 21 and 30mins. There is very little difference in quality between the two of these as both produce exceptional quality recordings. The camera itself allows the DVD to be finalised inside itself allowing the disc to be taken strait from the camera and played back into any standard DVD player. Other useful features include wind noise reduction and various digital video effects for the more adventurous user.

Discs for the camera are available widely. When purchasing discs it is wise to purchase re-recordable discs or DVD-RW as this will significantly reduce the running costs. Re-usable discs are available for around £10 for a pack of 5.
One the most useful extras to purchase is an additional battery. Whilst the original Canon battery has a remarkably good life time for the size, it is always useful to have a spare. A word of advise on purchasing spare batteries.... don't buy the original Canon one. You will be charged around £30 - 40. you can pick up a higher capacity battery along with a spare charger from the likes of E-bay for around £20 and the quality is just as good!
