OK lets face it - you've now built up a DVD collection so large you want to start making your own movies! Well if you can stretch to around £2,300 this is the camera to do it with! This camera was used to shoot 28 Days Later (starring Cillian Murphy - Girl With a Pearl Earing) which grossed over $65 Million at the box office worldwide! It was also used to shoot Full Frontal (starring Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt), and was used to shoot the Mexican scenes in Traffic (starring Benicio Del Toro)!
One of the things that attracts all the wanna-be film makers to this camera is that it looks the part. It looks professional and stands out from the crowd. Although it is bigger than many hand held cameras it is not too heavy for shooting for long periods, and has a good shoulder support.
It is easy to use with many different shooting modes, it has an "easy" setting for beginners, and then more professional modes as you begin to learn it's many features. One of my favourite features is the timer shot. You can shoot for example one frame per minute - so that you can shoot the sun going down and it look like it is setting fast on the screen.
The main controls are all found on one central power dial right which is easy to operate. Even when looking through the viewfinder, it's easy to make adjustments whilst the camcorder is actually recording.
The tapes used and MiniDV and these can be bought very cheaply on the high street - around £3 a tape. You can also used the very expensive "time chip" tapes which cost around £60 a tape if you want maximum quality output.
The footage can be sent via firewire cable directly into editing suites such as Adobe Premiere. This means you can be editing within minutes of shooting and adding that all important Kenickie soundtrack (check my other reviews!!).
You can fit many filters to the front lens (size 72mm) which simply screw in - you can use any many of filter - Hama, Hoya, Jessops, etc. This is especially useful if you want to add more atmosphere to your movie by using colour tones (like in NARC where they use blue filters for "cold street scenes" and red filters for the "warm family scenes").

Canon offer a wide range of accessories for the XL1s for the professional filmaker, these include a full manual lens, XLR audio adapter, black and white CRT viewfinder and many more. The camera is easy to use and is fairly lghtweight and portable which makes it ideal for electronic news gathering.
The only issue I have with this camera is the slow autofocus speed, however unless you are doing very fast panning shots ...

The previous model by canon(DM-XL1s) was good but this on is absolutely stupendous and even though i believe that digital camcorders can get better than this, at this point of time , there are very few prosumer camcorders that can beat this particular model in this price range. The DM-XM2 is a professional 3ccd camcorder meant for the budding filmaker or semiprofessional and not for the average home user unless u are a home user who can afford this baby.
