Advantages: Optical Stabiliser, Image Quality, Photo, Powerful Zoom Disadvantages: Servo focus, can be bad in low light.

The picture quality is generally superb - the three CCDs reproduce everything very faithfully. It's not so hot in low light though - doesn't seem to pick up as much detail. However, you can adjust camera speed and aperture manually.

The zoom goes up to a ludicrous 100x (20x optical) and the rocker is very smooth.
I've had to get used to the servo-driven focus though. I'll be honest - I don't like it. When using it manually there's quite a bit of lag, making hard to "snap" into focus or indeed do anything quickly where focusing is involved.

The flip-out LCD screen is a real bonus for hand-held "running about" stuff. This is also where the optical image stabiliser really shines. It eliminates a hell of a lot of wobble.

The photo button is surprisingly useful - it records 6 seconds of still image with sound. To be honest, it's a right laugh with your mates ¦o)
For editing, a DV-in enabled camera is extremely useful as it provides a lossless backup once the project is finished.
In summary, this is a fantastic camera. The only real minus point is the slow focusing, but I guess I can forgive it that!

This is the one you want. I bought this with a mind to make shoert films. I've made a few but now am taking this little beauty abroad to shoot a documentary on apes. Advantages: Great for special events. Disadvantages: Pricey!
As most top quality items do, we get a nicely packaged item, with all the appropriate information, such as the instruction manual, which is overall very easy to follow and it even includes diagrams for those of you out there who are not over technically minded.
The XM2 is Canon's replacement for the DM-XM1 three-CCD MiniDV camcorder. If you have seen a Sony VX2000, you will notice that these two camcorders look quite alike.
Although the image of it looks quite sturdy it actually isn't (measuring 11.8 cm x 30.6 cm x 13.6 cm) , also weighing in at 1.12 kg, it makes it all that comfortable to hold. So, no tired arms!
The CanonXM2 digital camcorder is the ideal choice for recording broadcast or web content, making educational videos or registering an event like a wedding. A point worth raising is that the battery lasts for a fair ...

Manufacturer's product description
At last there's a high-performance camcorder for serious digital enthusiasts. The Canon XM1 is the sister model to the XL1, a camcorder highly praised by the professionals for its state of the art technology with broadcast quality pictures. Based on the same exceptional design, the XM1 combines the strengths of the Canon L lens system, CCD technology and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) to achieve outstanding picture quality. Equipped with a series of pre-programmed settings and filming effects, this serious tool will help you attain new levels of creativity. Renowned for its expertise in imaging technology, Canon is the first video manufacturer to bring out a camcorder equipped with a Fluorite lens. Fluorite is a natural ore with the powerful ability to collect light at a single point, thus by-passing the optical limitations posed by normal glass. The incorporation of fluorite technology provides unrivaled sharpness and resolution while eliminating most color aberrations. The improved image quality is especially apparent when filming at high magnifications. What's more, to beat brightness blur caused by sand or snow, an ND filter reduces the amount of light to the CCD.The XM1 also boasts a 20x optical zoom, which is equivalent to a huge 806mm zoom lens on a 35mm SLR camera and which simply outperforms existing 3 CCD camcorders. It operates in combination with the Optical Image Stabilizer, which is built into the lens and virtually eliminates camera shake, previously a problem experienced when shooting with long zoom ratios. Canon camcorder Image Stabilization operates in a purely optical manner outperforming models with electronic stabilization. Canon's XM1 incorporates a 3 CCD system with Pixel Shift to bring you high-quality color recordings. Each CCD sensor has 320, 000 pixels and is dedicated to a primary color, red, green or blue, to enhance natural color reproduction with low color noise. The Pixel Shift feature automatically compensates for the human eye's sensitivity to green and provides detailed resolution rivaling that of 480, 000 pixel systems. As each pixel captures more light, you get a better signal-to-noise ratio and greater dynamic range. Vertical smear is thus minimized, further contributing to the impressive picture quality.
