...reviews, I decided that the Canon IXUS 400 was a good product that suited my needs, the only problem was that if I was going to invest in a new digital camera, I felt that I should go for 5MP.
This is when I noticed that Canon had brought out the IXUS 500 the big brother of the 400.

I have been looking to upgrade from my old digital camera for a few months now, and having read a lot of reviews, I decided that the Canon IXUS 400 was a good product that suited my needs, the only problem was that if I was going to invest in a new digital camera, I felt that I should go for 5MP. This is when I noticed that Canon had brought out the IXUS 500 the big brother of the 400. The book price for this little gem was around £400, but a search around the web found it available for £298 (pixmania). I decided that before I made my purchase, I would go and have a look at one "in the flesh" so I trotted down to my local Jessops to find one.
The first impression of the camera were very good. It is small and stylish, and has a nice weight to it, which makes it feel nice and solid. The buttons are small, but well laid out. You do not feel in danger of pressing the wrong one by accident.
I was impressed, so I asked what there best price was, and they price matched at £316 (apparently they cannot price match to pixmania as they are based in france).
There were a few accessories I wanted to buy.
The camera does not come with a case as standard, which I must admit I think is quite shoddy for a camera that retails at £400. Anyway there are a huge variety of cases aroung, for about £10-15 and I found one with a spot for an extra memory card.
It comes with a 32mb compact flash memory card, which is not bad as standard, but I wanted to get a 128mb one as well.
I also decided to get an extra battery. The camera comes with a Lithium battery as standard (this was one of my requirements for the camera, no having to dischard it fully before recharging), but I decided to get a spare anyway. Its about £40 for a genuine canon spare but I got a compatible one for £18. So all in all I got the whole lot for £350, and no waiting for delivery!
Once I got home I started to play with the camera in earnest. The included battery had a small amount of charge in it, so I set the other one to charge while I started to play.
The camera was extremely easy to pick up and go, just turn it on, and click away. The zoom is a wheel around the shutter button, push anticlockwise to zoom in, clockwise to zoom out. The shutter has 2 levels, hold it on the first one to allow the autofocusing to work, and then push down a bit further to take the picture.
Reviewing the pictures on the back of the camera is also easy. When you have taken a picture it will display it for a few seconds, before going back to live mode (the amount of time it is displayed for is configurable from the menu). To review all the pictures on the camera, you have a 2 position slide button. When it is to the right you are in recording mode, and to the left it is in play mode. When you are in play mode, you can use 2 of the buttons next to the display to move throught the pictures, and a quick click of the func key followed by the set key deletes the image.
The camera is set to take pictures in the large mode by default (2592 x 1944) but has 3 other sizes available, 2048 x 1536, 1600 x 1200, 640 x 480, so plenty of choice, and images are stored in jpeg format. In large mode the 32mb card will take around 12 images, but as this is much bigger than A4 size im not sure you'd need to use this size very often.
I must admit that by this stage I had not looked at the manual in any great detail, but there are clearly lots of options that you can change in the menus, including showing histogram information for your images to tell you whether the image is too bright or too dark.
The battery I had left charging, was done in 2 hours so I could continue to play, while I charged the other one.
I installed the software and downloaded my pictures easily, using the supplied USB cable to connect to my computer. One feature I liked about the software was the ability to get it to create directories for your pictures with the date they were taken, making it very easy to sort your pictures. Although if this does not appeal to you, you do not have to do it this way :-) I was very impressed by the quality of the pictures, they were bright and vibrant. 5mp seems to give you a huge amount of detail. The pictures were very clear, with even the smallest of details being very well defined.
I have yet to delve in depth into all the options on this camera, but it certainly seems to be very configurable, and the menu system is easy to navigate through.
I would highly recommend this product without hesitation.
Advantages: Camera has a small footprint, is packed with features and has a quality feel about it Disadvantages: You probably need to increase the memory card and buy a case for it
...card. I bought the Canon Case which was available as an option when I bought the camera but it wasn't cheap at £30!!
I was worried because I have large fingers and find some mobile phones difficult if the buttons are small and close together. I have not had any problems with any of the functions everything is intuative. I never read the instructions for anything. I have managed to take hundreds of pictures so far without once referring to the manual.
... ...half the price of genuine canon batteries). and usually have one in the camera, one on charge and one in the pocket of the carrying case ready to use.
When using the highest resolution, files produced can be quite large (2Meg or so) But even on lower resolution the pictures are excellent.
We went to a Ball with some friends, 2 other couples, and I took pictures of each couple. I printed A4 copies for each couple on standard photo paper and they ...

Advantages: This baby has everything! Best camera on market! Disadvantages: quite bulky
...buy cheaper ones than the Canon IXUS 500 but you won't fall in love with it. Sorry for sounding so patronising but it really is the best camera on the market by far. It's amazingly simple to use with very simple buttons, and menus. The battery lasts ages and the picture quality it produces is better than some professional Photo shops I've been to!
It's a 5megapixel camera which means it can capture 5,000,000 pixels. So the resolution is going to ... ...with clarity and even auto focus if you want it to. Its zoom is upto 12times (3times optical).
The battery life lasts a good long time. I upgraded my memory card to a FLASH 512meg card (don't get confused by those pathetically poorly trained sales people at some shops... it uses a FLASH memory card and not an SD card.)
Anyway I upgraded to a 512meg card and that can take on its best quality over 300 pictures and the battery will last all that time. ...

With canon now being a market leader in digital cameras and the IXUS range being one of their top achievers its not suprising they hit the mark with the IXUS 500.

...camera, and after choosing the Canon Ixus 500, I am certainly not disappointed. The camera has a compact, stylish and ergonomic design. It feels solid to hold but is also light enough to carry around easily. Setting up the camera for the first time was reassuring straightforward. Advantages: Easy to use, simple but versatile with features for advanced users Disadvantages: Battery life drains fast when using the LCD screen
...seen the results of previous Canon digital IXUS models from family members it was time for me to get one. The new 500 model seemed like a good model to choose. Sure enough having used the camera for some time I can see why the Canon's come so highly recommended.

The panoramic picture taker is really handy and the program that comes with the camera for stitching the photos together is incredible. Reviews which might be of interest for "Canon Digital IXUS 500"
Advantages: Small & Stylish, Wide-Angle, Dual card-slot. Disadvantages: Poor picture quality; chromatic abberation, noise, no manual controls.
not against Fuji as a brand. In fact I have thoroughly enjoyed their 2Mp F401 for many years until the CCD chip died a few days ago. That took far superior pics than this offering does. And apart from the fringeing problem, the E510 and E550 were otherwise excellent cameras, and when the CCD chip on my E510 goofed, Fuji repaired the camera very quickly under warranty.
In the past I have tried a CanonDigitalIXUS500 which was compact and did actually take very good and sharp shots. I just didn't like the camera (for no particular reason) so got rid of it. Unless you REALLY want a wide-angle job, you could try something from Canon's current IXUS range (if it's still going) but not their A430 cos that can be a bit fuzzy/blotchy at times. If you want smaller, Olympus Miju's might be worth a look.
If wide is a MUST you could check ...
Advantages: great image quality from a tiny camera! Disadvantages: noisy lens mechanism due to it being such a big lens in such a small body
Picked this up nearly 3 months ago now as my third compact digital after having a kodak for my first then a canonIXUS500 after that.
I also shoot with a Canon EOS 300d so was looking for great image quality, and a general upgrade from my IXUS.
I went for the R7 because it starts up and shoots so fast its perfect as a little point and shoot. The zoom level is brilliant and I don't even use digital zoom.
As far as settings go its got all that you would expect in terms of the automatic options and then for the more advanced users the array of custom options are far beyond any compact digital I have used in the past. Its even got manual focus!
I've not really found any faults with the camera so far, it does everything I need and more, looks really cool and is really easy to use. ...
Advantages: Not many but it is well made. Disadvantages: Colour, Choice of material, Expensive
This has got to be the most impractical camera case ever...and...er I bought one. OK so I was desperate, but here is my review and I hope this helps someone who maybe thinking of buying this case for their DigitalIxus.
Details
The case is for the CanonDigitalIxus range, namely the 300,330,400, the new 500 and probably the v2 range.
It is finished in a light grey suede (why, why why?) with beltloop and zipped memory card department (removable) to the front. It has an embossed Canon logo and its dimensions are 65mm (width) x 95mm (height) x 40mm (deep). These dimensions include the detachable memory card case, which when removed make the main case 35mm deep.
The Materials.
My Ixus 330 is fantastic. Canon probably spent years developing and testing it, then 5 minutes on designing the case. The materials used ...
