I got my first camera when I was eight years old and have been a keen photographer ever since. When I was thirteen I bought myself a better camera. I absolutely loved it and used it quite a lot. When my dad got our first digital camera I was forever borrowing it as we could put the photos straight onto the computer. He moved on to get a further two digital cameras, (at different times) and still I was asking to borrow them and I was fairly happy with this situation. Although, since my niece, Toni, was born in August I've been using the camera almost every weekend. At one point the camera did break and needed to be sent for repair (which according to my dad was my fault for using it too much!) So what a lovely surprise I got on Christmas morning to find my parents had bought me my very own digital camera. Canon Ixus 50. Out of all the camera's I've had or used this has got to be my favourite! (My dad is jealous because my camera is smaller than his is and he wants to swap!) It is really easy to use and it is just a nice size to carry around. Weight 130g. Size (H)53, (W)86, (D)20.7mm. It is less than half the size of my dad's camera.
When my parents bought the camera (from Comet) it was on offer. It came with a case, an extra battery and an extra strap to carry it. (£349) I am reviewing the whole set. The case is not always available when you buy the camera, it depends where you shop.
The camera came in two boxes. When I opened the first box, I could see the camera case, extra battery (rechargeable) and the extra strap. There was another box inside this, which contained the camera itself. This box also had various leads in for connecting the camera to the computer or printer. There was also two CD's. One is a starter guide disk and the other is a digital camera solutions disk. System requirements: Windows 98SE/Me/2000 SP4, Windows XP Mac OS x v10. I have not needed to use either of these disks because I also got a printer which I can insert the SD card straight into. The camera also came with a charger for the batteries. The camera has rechargeable Li-ion batteries (NB-4L) which are square and are designed for the camera. The camera came with quite a few different instructions. There is a system map, which shows where the leads, battery, SD card etc go. I found this really useful for quick set-up. There is a European Warranty System leaflet, a direct printer user guide, a leaflet about Canon Image Gateway (www.cig.canon-europe.com), a quick start guide, which includes lots of images, and finally the camera user guide. This is 193 pages long and explains how to operate the camera. It is very well detailed and has images, which show you which part of the camera it is talking about.
Charging the batteries - the batteries only take 1hour and a half each to charge. The light on the charger changes from orange to green when the battery is charged. I was delighted that it only took a short time to charge so that I could start using my camera fairly quickly. The batteries have a cover that you can place on them to keep them clean when not in use. The battery life is really good but unfortunately there is no warning when power is going to run out. So I recommend that you carry a spare battery just in case.
I find the camera really easy to use. I only needed to read the quick start guide to get familiar with it. It takes photo and video (640 x 480 movie capture and sound recording.) You can also view the photos on the play setting (2in LCD screen) which makes it easy to view them to see if you're happy with it. The camera only comes with a 16Mb SD card, which only stored 9 photos. I recently bought a 256Mb over the internet for £15.
The camera has a timer, which I have used on a couple of occasions. I find this works really well. The light flashes for 10 seconds before bleeping to let you know it is going to take. There is a setting for red eye, which seems to work quite well on everyone but my niece! :-) The flash is really good and can be set to automatic or turned off completely if required. There are six different settings for the flash.
The menu has a section where you can change the theme on the camera, change the start up image and sound, the operation sound, the self-timer sound and the shutter sound. There are only three of each to choose from. I selected an image and sound of a bird, which appears when I turn it on.
Overall I think this is an excellent camera and I am really pleased with it. The camera is a perfect size and the case is soft to the touch but has hard edges for support. I find that the camera is easy to use with excellent results. I would definitely recommend it.
Other information 5m pixels. Mini-B, PTP USB connection. 3 x optical zoom High Power Flash GF-DC1. £318.89 without case (Argos)
I've added some pictures that I have taken with my camera.
Advantages: Great View, Effect, Image Adjustement, Quality Disadvantages: Can be blurry, SOMETIMES
Well, I finally decided to purchase a digital camera, and didn't know where to start...
I eventually found myself searching Canan's product's and saw the new Digital IXUS advertised in a magazine with a good review.
The whole IXUS range had very good reviews, however i had to decide which one i could afford/need. I made my decision to get the 5 mega pixel - the IXUS 50.
I purchased this for a very reasonable price after searching through this ... ...for a holiday to South Africa, this involved taking pictures of wildlife and scenary, so it had to be at a good standard, and it is.
I will just get down to the features of the camera now...
--@@-- Image Quality --@@--
Genereally the image quality is suburb, especially when using a timer or with a steady hand. However, as you may have read elsewhere bluriness can happen if you leave out flash, on the other hand, if using with a steady hand, this ...

Advantages: Good quality camera Disadvantages: Not as many pixels as some these days
...is the perfect family-camera.
The Canon IXUS 50 Digital Camera is a great value for money and ideal for everyday use.
==Features==
- A VERY fast startup time of 2-3 seconds - probably the main reason i chose this over any other competing products - the number of times I'v missed a good shot because I'v had to wait for the camera to come on.
- Rechargeable battery ideal, long lasting and charges fairly quickly.
- Sleek, modern design extremely ... ...easily.
- Good video quality.
- A viewfinder! Not many digital cameras have these any more but they're far superior to using the screen - no more trouble seeing the screen.
- Good zoom and review mode.
- Takes standard SD cards - cheap to buy.
==Disadvantages==
- Not as many pixels as many other cameras available today - 5m.p.
- Screen is quite small.
Certainly purchase this camera if you're looking for a good average camera although if you've ...

Advantages: Compact, sleek, easy to use, excellent picture quality, good video quality Disadvantages: Buttons can be a little small, screen on rear could be larger
I bought this camera when it was new over 2 years ago now. I is still as reliable as when first bought. Picture quality is excellent and ease of use superb. This is one of the best digital compact cameras i have used an although was over £200 when new can be bought at a fraction of the cost now. Screen on rear is adequate size but the newer version (Ixus 60 and above) have all the same features but a larger screen. If you are looking for a camera ...

Advantages: Slim, small and sleak. Overall excellent picture quality. Disadvantages: Not many, except possibly 'whiting' of blue sky
Intially going for the cybershot series from Sony, this range for its sleak and compact beauty stood out a mile. Given its 5m pixel, I bought 1GB memory and to date it gives excellent results. Whether, it is optical zoom, or darker conditions the lens is brilliant reproducing excellent colours. However, be careful on distance and flash as here it may need a bit of practice. Also, settings for glorious sunny days need to be adjusted since you often ... ...of the lens. Nevetheless, numerous people within my circles have seen and used the camera and assessed results, and we agree that an excellent all round camera which looks good too! In order to save memory some lower pixel resolutions can be used, and I was suprised at the picture quality. ...

Advantages: Very good image, Stylish, 16 different shooting modes, Big LCD Disadvantages: Big-ish in width. Not massive thou!
This is the second of my two digital cameras, and i have to say, i use this whenever possible over my CanonIXUS50.
This camera is simply so stylish and the "twisty" fewature as i like to call it, just adds to its brilliance.
The cost-
Well this is fedinately worth the money, i paid £280 for mine, inc delivery and it came with a pouch USB lead, well, basically all the things i needed.
The Image-
The image quality is fantastic, even from such a slim, stylish camera. The camera has 5.0 Megapixels and the colour quality is also superb.
The usage-
It comes with a my menu feature which also allows you to asign a shortcut in the 4th menu slot, (the first 3 being shoot, playback and settings). This is brilliant as you can asign to the shortcut of a feature you will use the most.
Also, the speed of which it processes the image, is ...
