(+) Ultra-compact dimensions, fun automatic tools, good performance for the asking price (-) Cluttered menu layout, camera buttons are scarce, specs are almost identical to the Samsung ES15
Advantages: Size, easy to use, cheap for what it has Disadvantages: too many options for the novice!!

So I changed tactics and went for a digital camera which could take videos (on the suggestion of my other half, as her old digital camera is falling apart. On a sidenote, can someone tell me why, after I bought it, on her suggestion, she then said "I have a digital camera, why didn't you but a camcorder?"?!?!).
One thing I should confess is that I bought it whilst on holiday in the states, so mine's a "powershot sd450", although it's the same camera. Confusing huh?
This is my first digital camera, and the first time I have spent more than £15 on one, so I'm coming from the "yeah, I've used a camera before, now it's time to get a proper one" side. My first impressions are "I love my new toy, it's fab!". It's easy to use - point and click and the camera tries to sort out most things for you. That's not to say you can't do other stuff with it - it has so many options for you to play around with that I won't bother listing them all here. Some really cool things it can do included "colour swap" where you can swap colours in a picture; or have everything black and white with e.g. only blue colours showing. It does the usual stuff too (red eye reduction, variable shutter speeds etc). One of the most useful ones I've found is the white coolour balancing feature which makes things look more natural - if you're indoors, for example, it will reduce the "yellowness" caused by tungsten lights.
The movie mode on it is pretty good too - there's four options which give you a trade of in quality and size - the downside is that for some reason (with win xp) it has trouble downloading movies over 210 MB (also if you have ~1000 pics on your memory card you may run into problems with xp) - I haven't verified this myself, but it seems to make the gig memory card I haggled over a bit redundent.
The zoom lens is pretty good, although you do get slight distortion at the edges, but I don't think this would anyone except the professionals. The digital zoom's ok, but as with most of these it's only good on the first of the four settings - after that the blacks become purple and you end up thinking you took the picture with a cheap camera phone!
I really do love the LCD screen on it - it's nice, big and shows everything clearly, and it;s big enough so that when the menu options come up you can still work out what's what after a few pints (not tried it after a few plus a few as I'm too scared I'd drop it in my pint!).
The battery life's ok, but I have found it running out of charge just when I didn't want it to - making the second battery (again, haggled for, and got!) a very worthy addition.

32MB SD card (Get a bigger one - not a gig though, unless you're not using XP!), NB-4L lithium-ion battery, battery charger, wrist strap, AV/USB cables, software CD-ROM, user's manual, and software manual (both printed).
I'd also but a case for it, and a spare battery.
All in all I'm extremely pleased with my latest toy, and would recomend in to anyone except those that want a top notch professional camera or those wanting to take specialist pictures (like fast paced sporting events).

You can make photos with picture resolution of up to fife mega pixels. From my point of view this is very good. If you want to take a photo of something far away you can use a 3x optical and 4 times digital zoom. The camera also supports a flashlight. Actually, the camera is divided up into three different modes: One is for taking pictures, one is for making movies and the ...

Quick review of Canon Digital IXUS 55
This camera is perfect for going everywhere with you - it's slimline (0.7 inches thick) and lightweight (just over 150g), and it switches on straightaway when you press the 'on' button. As you can see, it's a great-looking camera, and has a fantastic digital zoom that gives extremely sharp, clear photos. It's extremely easy to use too - onscreen menu explains everything clearly, and it's full of all kinds of useful settings that I haven't even got around to experimenting with yet! Unlike my last bulky camera, this one fits in every bag I own, no matter how small, so I don't have to rely on someone else having a camera with them anymore and i can literally take it everywhere with me. I love this camera! ...

...I received for years. The Canon Ixus 55 just didn't give me any reasons to dislike it! First of all, this one perfectly suits a buyer who simply wants a quality camera that can fit into a pocket, yet its price doesn't fall into the "professional camera" category, meaning you, an amateur, get more than enough for your money. I just wish I could attach some photos I took with this camera with the review to prove it!

Advantages: Super Small, Slim, packed with useful features and fantastic photo quality. Disadvantages: None that I can comment on
This has been one of the best small compact digital cameras I have owned to date. I had CanonIxus55 previously which I unfortunately damaged (I'm slightly on the clumsy side - so get through camera's quite easily). The CanonIxus 70 is a brilliant replacement, so small - but packed full of the same excellent Canon features that the 55 had. The Ixus was always seen as a fantastic camera even from the days of APS - I get so many good remarks from people.
I love the Black/Silver retro look and think it looks classy in comparison to the silver version I've seen - but that's just personal taste. The camera switches on really fast and takes photos quickly and easily - I've been so happy with the output - quality photos, either from my canon printer or professional services. If you're like me, then I use my camera for everything ...

good value, good mode selection, good quality, well built, canon quality, good battery life, good resolution and quality, good manual controls, good LCD
clumpy, clunky design and controls, too big to be a true compact, interface pauses, zoom irritating, not worth the upgrade from G3 (*)
