For all your point and shoot needs, the pocket-sized CanonIxus 75 does the job perfectly. Canon continue to produce high quality camera equipment for the mid-range consumer at a price thats extremely competitive. It can currently be bought for under £170 and comes supplied with a good range of accessories (case, strap, usb cable)
Aesthtics
One look at the Ixus 75 and I was instantly attracted towards it. The silver front is very appealing and this particular model also has a silver lens unit compared to the 'Ixus 75 Black'. The size is perfect to fit into the hand when taking a photo and the rounded edges make it comfortable to hold. The back of the unit is black and i fell that this makes a nice change to the usual all silver or all black colour of most digital cameras on the market.
Image Quality
Being a 7.1 megapixel camera, the photos taken are extremely sharp and can easily be printed to A4 without losing any quality. I haven't tried A3 yet but i'm sure there will be minimal difference. Contrast of the pictures is superb with bright areas not losing any detail whilst at the same time the darker areas also show up very well. The brightness is also really good and as such colours are not overpowering nor are they too faded. This results in a 'true to life' photo. Photo quality is equally good indoors in low light as it is outdoors and this is down to the excellent flash. The light is distributed evenly throughout the photo and this avoids bright spots on the image. The sharp images are also produced thanks to the face recognition software that Canon have introduced in teh camera. When taking a photo, boxes appear around the face/s to show where the camera will be looking to enhance its focus. However, i have found that often boxes do appear in areas where there are no faces but dont think that this disturbs the image quality in any way.
Features
The Ixus 75 is packed full of features. For the amateur photographer using the camera for party or holiday shots the auto option is perfect and optimises the cameras settings for the conditions. There is also the option of selecting a predefined scene such as Indoor or Beach and once again the camera optimises its settings. For the more avid photographer, these settings can be individually changed and allow you to change the ISO, white balance etc. Other features include red-eye correction, 3x optical zoom (12x combined) and a Digic III processor for fast response times.
Screen and Menu System
The HUGE 3inch screen is excellent for both taking your photos and then viewing them and showing to those around you. It gives excellent detail of the photos with its 230,000 pixel resolution. Canon also claim that it has an anti-glare and scratch-resistant coating although i havent had a chance to test this for myself (nor do i want to try scratch it!). The menu system is extremelly easy to use on the screen and settings can easily be changed. The selector wheel on the side of the screen can also be used sroll through the pictures much faster than simply pressing 'down' many times (by rotating finger around the edge of it).
Summary
The Canon Ixus 75 produces images of superb quality and with its 3inch LCD and diverse range of features is really a worthwile buy. Similar cameras are available at a cheaper price but this one is better than the competition and well worth the extra cost.
