I bought this camera as a Christmas present for my wife who does not like my digital SLR. I reviewed sample images from this and other cameras, and felt that the IXUS 850IS offered the best combination of ease of use and image quality - the two tenets upon which all compact cameras must be built.
In the hand, the camera has a nice heft, treading that fine line between flimsiness and overweight. It's also a good size, and the extension of the control wheel to the edge allows operation from the right thumb, meaning that all of the key controls can be used one-handed. The paintwork on the body does scratch rather easily, and the camera does not come with a case as standard. However, cases can be picked up for as little as £2. Under a flap of questionable integrity on the base of the camera lies both the Li-Ion battery and the Secure Digital slot.
The use of SD is good, as this is the cheapest of the memory formats, and a fast 2GB card can be had for less than 25 pounds if you look hard enough. This will give you over 1,000 shots on JPEG-Super.
The 3x optical zoom gives a 35mm-equivalent zoom range of around 35-135mm, which is quite good. I would prefer it a little wider at the wide end, but my wife is not concerned by this. The control is quite standard, being a rotating ring around the shutter button. The shutter button is quite lifeless, but it does work, and the shutter lag that normally affects digital compacts is not too bad on the 850IS.
There is a so-called face detection system, which is meant to help the autofocus lock on to the key areas of the frame. This is intermittent in its accuracy, but to be honest, the camera usually selects quite narrow apertures leading to a large depth of field, so autofocus accuracy is within acceptable tolerance.
The crowning glory of the shot-taking experience however is the image stabiliser. It's incredibly effective, and very few (less than 1%) of the shots coming off the camera are visibly affected by camera shake. It's excellent.
The flash, however, is a different story. Minimum flash range is probably around 1.5m, so anything closer to the camera when the flash fires will be massively over-exposed. As a relatively basic camera in terms of controls, there is no Flash Exposure Compensation, which is a shame. One is left with no resort other that to force the flash off then hope that the IS holds things in check during the longer exposure. Finally (on the subject of the flash) the flash is right in the corner of the body, and it's rather too easy to partially obscure the flash with fingers, leading to part of the scene being massively under-exposed.
In terms of setup and personalisation, the camera has limited options, but they're all easily configurable. This makes the camera simple to use and yet gives the user a feeling of a small degree of control over the creative process. It makes the camera ideal for someone not too interested in photography, but still wanting to take good pictures.
Image quality is excellent. You can disable the highest-ISO capability from general use, and this will stop the camera cranking up the ISO to give you unusable shots. Still, SLR users will want to run noise-reduction in post production on most of the 850IS's images shot in low light: it is notably worse than an SLR in this regard, whilst still being better than its rivals.
Software provided is the usual Canon family, incorporating the file managing ZoomBrowser. Transferring the images off the camera is extremely simple, since the camera installs itself on your computer as a removeable disk, and Windows will then pick this up and offer you the choice of importing your files. Image files are around 2.7MB in size at JPEG-Super, and full EXIF data is included to aid with classification.
For a small automatic compact, this is an excellent camera. The creative options available give you enough control to be able to help the camera in difficult situations, without requiring any indepth knowledge of photography. The fact that many compact users are also not the most careful of photographers means that the inclusion of Canon's Image Stabiliser and the DIGIC processor from their SLR ranges is a stroke of genius - aiding the user to produce good shots without getting all "David Bailey". It's not the cheapest of cameras, but having compared it with similar models from Olympus and Sony, I can say it's one of the best.

...be dropping soon) and the Canon Ixus 850is. Of all the reviews I read I could find little to choose between them so trip to local shop to see first hand. Whilst I liked the 3 inch viewing screen and Leica lens on the FX50 my personal preference was for the Ixus as I found it much easier to hold and having previously owned an Ixus 400 was marginally biased in that direction. Holding the 850 just confirmed my choice.
I chose AllCam to supply because ... ...right I am. Until Canon bring out a similar wide angle lens on a 10 Mega Pixel with Image stabilisation (neither of which the Ixus 900 has) then this would be my preferred but. Go for it, don't sue me but I would be very surprised indeed if you were disappointed.

Advantages: Stylish Design, Great photo results and good features Disadvantages: struggles with fast movements
Great Compact, Stylish with a good set of features.
I bought this camera about 2 years ago and have never regretted speding teh approx £230 for it. At the time that was a great price online but I'm sure you can get other better models in the Ixus range for cheaper now.
I've managed to combine it's use from holiday snaps abroad to trying some more creative amateur shots. It has a great deal of functions including some which you won't find in some ... ...to shoot in widescreen shots, particularly useful for group shots or landscapes. You can also use colour select mode which allows you to shoot a picture with only one colour showing up e.g. good for capturing flowers etc. Colour replace allows you to replace colours. This allows you to get creative with just a small amount of skill.
This camera also has a viewfinder which is great if the sun is shining on your screen and you can't see the subject, ...

Advantages: Compact, great picture quality, ease of use Disadvantages: No battery level indicator, screen can get smudged easily with finger prints
I owned an Ixus 50 and was generally impressed with the picture quality and ease of use and build quality but when this camera was stolen, I spent a lot of time comparing compact cameras. The 850 is quite pricey for the spec, but the price of this camera is coming down. I am really pleased with the Ixus 850 - great picture quality. What singles out this camera is the 28mm wide angle lens. Great for wide shots, but make sure you zoom in a bit when ... ...around your friends and family. As with all compact digitals, the flash isn't much good if you're more than a few metres away from something. However, with the image stabilisation, I've taken quite a few indoor shots with no flash and they aren't too blurry. I've used the video mode quite a bit and the quality of the video clips is excellent. Unfortunately, the video files are huge - only about 6 mins will fit on a 1Gb SD card. However, they are ...

Advantages: Design, Userfriendly, Image Stabilisation Disadvantages: none so far
General
I bought this camera in the summer (07) especially for my holidays in egypt and i was more than satisfied with the performance of the camera. The quality is very good especially for normal users (i.e. family); professionals might have a different opinion; Not only the size but also the user friendly interface are clear benefits of this camera.
Quality
I took pictures in the sunniest conditions and in bad weather conditions. ... ...camera as it still delivers great quality. The only problem I had was taking picture in the night which is a problem with almost every camera. I always used the pre-set options, but after trying our some manual setting I realised that the camera has got even more potential. Give it a try - experiment at the beginning a bit and soon you will know which setting to use when.
Design
It is just great! The camera is about small enough to fit in ...

Advantages: Very light and compact Disadvantages: The switch on button can be quite sensetive
I love this digital cam as it is so convenience to carry around. Instead of keeping it in the cam case, I keep it safe in my Coach wrislet.
Being mom with twins around and love taking photos, this digital cam is very light and I can even carried one of my twins in one armed while taking a perfect shot!
The video recorder was so cleared. Family members and friends thought that I have taken the video using the normal cam recorder but after showing ...

Manufacturer's product description
Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS imaging processor DIGIC III achieved high-definition and higher-speed processing without damaging the beauty of subjects. Real-image Zoom viewfinder can be used to conserve power by turning the LCD monitor off while shooting. Use the LCD monitor to compose close-ups in macro mode since images composed with the viewfinder may be off-center. This camera is equipped with a 3.8x optical zoom lens with a focal length of 4.6 - 17.3 mm (35 mm film equivalent 28 - 105 mm), f/2.8 - f/5.8, which is ideal for a wide range of photography including snapshots and scenic shots. The LCD monitor can be used to check an image during shooting, to play back recorded images or to adjust menu settings. You can have the camera automatically detect the position of a face and use this data to set the focus and exposure while shooting. Exposure Compensation can be adjusted in 1/3 stops in the range -2 to +2. Adjust the exposure compensation to a positive value to avoid making the subject too dark when it is backlit or shot against a bright background. Adjust the exposure compensation to a negative value to avoid making the subject too bright in night shots or when shot against a dark background. Shoot with auto, high ISO Auto, ISO 80, ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400, ISO 800 and ISO 1600 equivalent. Raise the ISO speed to use a fast shutter speed when you wish to reduce the effects of camera shake or avoid blurry subjects, or to turn the flash off when shooting in a dark area. Normally, the Auto white balance setting selects an optimal white balance. When the Auto setting cannot produce natural looking colors, change the white balance using a setting appropriate for the light source. Start playback with the image that was last displayed during the last playback session (Resume Playback). However, this image is reset when new images have been shot, when a memory card has been edited on a computer or when another memory card has been inserted, in which case playback starts with the image shot last. The histogram is a graph that allows you to check the brightness of the image. The greater the bias toward the right, the brighter the image. If the image is too dark, adjust the exposure compensation to a positive value. Similarly, adjust the exposure compensation to a negative value if the image is too bright.
