Lets start off with the fact that I think this camera is absolutely beautiful and so easy to use a complete novice could be up and running in seconds. I'll try a comprehensive list of features before I then comment on the features I have used recently.
The camera has approx. 3.2 million pixels, it's image sensor has 1/2.7-inch CCD giving about 3.3 million pixels. The lens stats are 5.4mm wide angle (w) - 10.8 mm telephoto (t). F-stop 2.8 (w) - 3.9 (t). The digital zoom is approx. 3.2x but boosted with the optical zoom can reach 6.4x.
The real-image zoom optical viewfinder is complemented by an 1.5 inch LCD monitor on the back of the camera. This is a low-temp TFT colour monitor with 100% coverage and approx 118,000 pixels.
Auto focusing (AF) has TTL and a 9 point AiAF/1-point AF (centre). The shooting distance in (AF) normal mode is from 47cm to infinity. Utilising macro AF 10-47cm (w)/ 23-47cm (t).
The shutter is both mechanical and electronic. Shutter speeds range from 15 - 1/1500 seconds but in long shutter mode reach 15 - 1 sec. Shutter speeds above 1.3 seconds operate with noise reduction.
The light is metered 3 ways: evaluative, centre- weighted average or spot (centre).
The exposure compensation system (program AE) executes in + or - 2.0 stops in 1/3 increments.
The camera has auto sensitivity or ISO equivalents 50, 100, 200, or 400.
There are many white balance settings pre-set (daylight, cloudy, tungsten, flourescent or flourescent H). The auto function can deal with this or you can custom set the balance.
The tiny but effective flash has a range in normal mode of 47cm - 3m (w) or 47cm - 2m (t). In macro mode 27-47cm (w/t). The flash settings include auto, red-eye reduction, on, off and slow synchro.
There are 4 shooting modes auto, manual, stitch assist and movie. Continuous shooting is about 2.2 shot/sec with LCD monitor off. A PC controlled shooting mode is available with the free software bundled with the camera.
The self-timer option activates the shutter after an approx. 10 secondds with a 2 second delay. There are means on the camera to adjust the sound of the countdown. (also more are available on the internet).
The recording format of this camera is the now ubiquitous (but very effective) Secure Digital Card (SD). Still images are recorded as JPEG's (Exif 2.2) whilst video as AVI with sound as WAVE (monaural).
There are several compression modes: superfine, fine and normal but images also have size modes of the following choices: Still images: Large: 2048 x 1536 pixels. Medium 1: 1600 x 1200 pixels. Medium 2: 1024 x 768 pixels. Small: 640 x 480 pixels. Video: 640 x 480 pixels (approx 30 sec record). 320 x 320 pixels (approx 3 minute record) 160 x 120 pixels (approx 3 minute record) 15 frames/second.
On top of all that there are 5 playback modes on the LCD monitor including single, index (9 thumbnails), 10x magnified, sound memo attach (60sec) or slide show.
This camera is also Canon Direct Print, Bubble Jet Direct and Pictbridge compatible for PC free printing. It is connected to a PC by USB (mini-B PTP) (supplied), a television by phono inputs (supplied) and is NTSC or PAL selectable and compatable.
Lastly (phew!) the battery is a removable rechargeable lithium-ion (type NB-3L) (1 hour charge). With the LCD monitor on you will get approx 210 images, before recharge and with it off about 550.
There are 12 languages to choose from for menus, mostly European with Chinese and Japanese aswell.
The dimensions of the camera are 85 x 56 x 23.9 mm and it weighs 165g (5.82oz).
Now for my opinion. I LOVE THIS CAMERA ! I have a Fuji Finepix I was happy with a couple of years ago but wanted more features to my new camera than it offered. Obviously technology has come a long way!
So after much perusing of the internet and many trips around town I was still indecisive then my fiancee bought me the Canon IXUS IIs for my birthday! Feeling very impressed with the cold stylish metal body I proceeded to put the battery in, press the ON button and take snaps. It's that easy! The auto mode deals with most situations you'd want but being an avid SLR owner I wanted to fiddle. Soon we had black and white pictures, sepia tinted ones and a Vivid video all crammed onto the 16mb SD card supplied. Still without opening the instruction book!
So looking in the box it came in I saw 2 cables, one USB for the PC and the other? Seemed to be 2 phonos for AV. Turned this little metal beauty around and lo and behold there's an AV out! Quick skip to the TV, in go the phonos and there I was on TV through the camera in 1 easy step! Very impressed I was too.
Feeling overcome I thought something must go wrong so decided to install the software supplied with the USB and see what happened. It worked! First time! Happy was I!
So I decided to open the instruction booklet and delve. What is Stitch Assist? It's a very very easy way to get landscape to 360 degree shots by joining up pictures through the LCD screen and using the software provided! 3 minutes was all it took to compose 3 shots, upload to the PC and stitch. it took longer to print than it did to create. Marvellous!
Ok what about the video quality? Watching myself on PC was not good enough (or BIG enough) so 2 seconds later plugged into the TV and it's great! really I cannot express how crystal clear the video is. Anyone in doubt can leave me a message and I will send you a few examples.
Bought myself a 128Mb SD card for £35 and the world is my photographic oyster now. My PC already has many videos, easy to send as emails, still images too.
As I mentioned I love my Pentax SLR and of course the 3.2 million pixel resolution does not truly compare but it's good enough, and sturdy enough, and small enough for everyday use with the reliability to take those important shots and with the exceptionally easy software supplied, print them out onto photo paper for brilliant results.
My only tiny tiny gripe is that my fingerprints seem to love this camera, though a quick wipe on the shirt and they go. Of course a bluetooth utility would be great but that's just me being picky.
There is even an option to change the start-up pictures and operational sounds with more themes being offered on Canon's website.
What I also love is that when you take a portrait shot (turn the camera 90 degrees), when viewed in the LCD monitor, it's the right way round. Small detail but effective.
Pricewise I think it's selling for about £180- £280 in the UK at the moment with the best offers online. It comes with a 16Mb card but a 128Mb upgrade for about £35 is a must.
Overall this camera is perfect for complete and utter novices with or without PC's, and also for more discerning customers who like to meddle with settings and see what they produce. Most of all it's brilliant fun and looks gorgeous.Jake

Advantages: Small and Robust Disadvantages: Requires a steady hand
I would describe this camera as a good, all-round holiday camera. It's small, robust, easy to use and packed full of features.
The 3.2 Megapixels of power allow you to take great photos and make great prints out of them.
For the amateur photographer there's the AUTO mode, where you simply poiint and click and the camera takes care of the rest. However, if you are feeling a little more creative you can use the MANUAL mode and unleash your creativity.
... ...movies with sound. What I especially like about this camera is its fast shutter times. This means you get the picture you want, rather than the one 5 seconds later as can be the case with some cheaper models. On the other hand, this fast response time can be slightly problematic, as if you shake too much whilst shooting, blurring can occur.
The software provided is great, and very easy to use. Even my little sister managed to use it - and that says ...

...MP HP 720 and the Canon blows it out of the water with more features, smaller design, picture quality, quality of construction, and in every other category I can think of. What i heard was 2X is not enough zoom, but if that is your top priority, you are looking for the wrong type of camera. The camera menus are also easy to learn and use. The best thing about the camera, besides ...

Advantages: Great picture quality Disadvantages: Is fairly heavy.
To start with, the look and feel of the camera instantly give the impression that this camera is built well, and it is.
It has some great features on it, you can change the size of the picture you want to take and the quality of it, all on the camera. You can even set a background on it, or add sounds, althought I think it would be nice if you could set your own photos as backgrounds, but I guess I'm just picky.
I find it very easy to operate, ... ...after about 5 minutes of messing about pressing buttons, you have the camera sorted. It works very well with Windows Xp (What I have, I don't know about other platforms etc).
The zoom isn't too powerful at 2x and 6.4x for digital zoom. The image at top zoom may look speckly until you take it then its as clear as the others are. I haven't once had a blurred picture and I use this camera at concerts too!
It also has a movie recorder with sound, which ...

Advantages: size, silver, photo quality, zoom, battery, software, general features Disadvantages: redeye
Wrapped in a gleaming costume of stainless steel, the CanonIxusii is the epitome of chic. Far from being ostentatious, however, the Ixus hides its wealth of features underneath a relatively simple exterior. On the front of the camera can be found a small opening for the optical viewfinder, and the most narrow of flash units. Turn the Ixus round, and the 1.5" LCD screen and plenty of buttons are set against the lustrous background. It fits easily into your pocket, being only slightly larger than a credit card. In order to make such a mini machine, Canon have had to make some changes to their usual models. The IxusII is their first digital camera to take the SD (secure digital) memory cards which are about the size of a stamp. It comes supplied with a 16mb card, which unfortunately does not get you very far. To get real storage I bought ...

Advantages: Neat and small. Good quality photos. Disadvantages: Battery life deterioration
I have a CanonDigitalIXUSII which is now about 3 years old, and I love it. Although it has had some problems, it is still working and i have never had to get it fixed. It's perfect for taking out and about, as the tiny size means it can slip into your pocket.
Photo quality is very good, and it takes SD cards, so you can put them into any multi-card reader, or plug the camera straight into your computer to download pictures. I find it best to avoid the digital zoom and set the photo quality to superfine for the best pictures. Then depending on the size of the card you buy, the more pictures you can take. I bought 2 cheap 128MB cards of the internet because you can't fit many on the 16MB one they provide you with. Unfortunately, being a small camera, it has a small case, with no pockets for spare cards, but this is a minor ...

available to the APS photographer inside the camera. The IxusII features C print ( Classic), H print ( wide angle) and panoramic ( superwide angle). The most exciting of which is the panoramic mode. Basically it is the size of two normal photographs stuck together side by side so you have a long thin photo like those old fashioned school photographs with the whole school on. They really are great for landscapes, it like having a super wide angle lens built in to the camera, which in itself is smaller than a cigarette packet, the best of both worlds. The camera can also be set to record data such as the time and date the photo was taken which can be printed on the front or back, other information such as the exposure setting etc is also recorded. Also a variety of data (IX information) is recorded onto the film which is used at the processing ...
