When I bought my Canon EOS 20D, I was thinking about getting a cheaper Sigma or Tamron objective to go with it. But since the optical performance of those 3rd party can't keep up with the Canon ones most of the time, because of the reverse-engineered Auto-Focus interface, I went for the safer option and got myself the 17-85 IS USM instead.
The objective is huge and heavy, which in conjunction with the EOS 20D really makes it a weight training exercise. The objective itself can be switched from Auto to manual via switch (you can also turn the image stabilization off) and manually focus using the focus ring, without being forced to go into manual focus mode.
The image stabilization tries to make up for the starting aperture of F4-5.6. Once you go to maximum zoom, the starting aperture will be 5.6, regardless of how much light there is around.
This makes it difficult to shoot steadily in dark conditions. You either have to get a tripod, or set the sensitivity to ISO 1600-3200 (high noise).
In low light, I prefer my Contax Yashica 50mm/1.4 much more. The Canon objective can feel a bit plastic and cheap, although not as cheap as the standard 18-55mm one. If you have the money, go for the 17-40L lense, which also has an ultra sonic motor (USM), but an aperture of F4 throughout the whole spectrum, as well as being a bit smaller and better built (I think it is one of the standard lenses recommended for the 5D).
I would recommend this lense for the entry-level photographer, although it can be almost as expensive as a Canon 400D body.
In the future, I will probably get a lighter fixed angle macro lense for travelling.
