stabiliser and a UD glass element, and is made up of a system of 12 lenses, which are divided up into 10 groups. It features a circular aperture diaphragm, which is ideal for emphasising subjects in photos shot against distracting backgrounds, and an image stabiliser with an automatic panning detection to reduce the effects of blur caused by camera movement. It also corrects chromatic aberrations and puts Canon's exclusive technology to good use by limiting image distortion. Thanks to its increased focal range, the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS is suitable for use by seasoned users, and for those looking for a flexible optical complementary telephoto lens and impressive-quality close-up photos. This lenswas voted "Best Lens 2008" at the TIPA awards.

Advantages: very fast AF mechanism, quiet operation, image stabilization Disadvantages: feels a bit plastic, low-light performance not so good
is around.
This makes it difficult to shoot steadily in dark conditions. You either have to get a tripod, or set the sensitivity to ISO 1600-3200 (high noise).
In low light, I prefer my Contax Yashica 50mm/1.4 much more. The Canon objective can feel a bit plastic and cheap, although not as cheap as the standard 18-55mm one. If you have the money, go for the 17-40L lense, which also has an ultra sonic motor (USM), but an aperture of F4 throughout the whole spectrum, as well as being a bit smaller and better built (I think it is one of the standard lenses recommended for the 5D).
I would recommend this lense for the entry-level photographer, although it can be almost as expensive as a Canon 400D body.
In the future, I will probably get a lighter fixed angle macro lense for travelling. ...
Advantages: Cheap and light Disadvantages: Grainy photo quality, low zoom
I recently purchased a sweet Canon 400D/XTi Rebel from Amazon.co.uk (£45 cashback!) and this standard zoom lens (CanonEF-S 18-55mm) came with it.
As far as I know, you cannot purchase the CanonEF-S 18-5mm on it's own, as it's designed specifically to be sold with the 400D/XTi Rebel package. I'm sure you can pick up a cheap one on eBay though (probably removed from a kit package, or being sold due to an upgrade from kit package). I've seen the EF-S 18-55mm sell for around £25-£35 at undamaged/rarely used condition on eBay, which is quite cheap!
I obviously chose the kit lens package with my 400D/XTi Rebel as it only adds about £40 in the price difference, and I couldn't afford a new lens at that time.
Before I start reviewing the actual lens, I'd like to say that isis a kit lens. It doesn't have a great built quality ...
Advantages: Excellent quality pictures, Useful wide angle range. Good build quality. Disadvantages: No lens hood, Not compatible with all EOS cameras
Introduction
The CanonEF-S 10-22mmf3.5-f4.5 USM lens is a high quality wide-angle zoom lens that is ideal for landscape, architectural and interior photography.
It is designed to be used with all Canon EOS cameras with an APS-C sized censor and an EF-S lens mount, it cannot be used with Canon full frame or film cameras, also some older EOS models will not accept this lens either.
To see if your camera is compatible with this lens, check your camera for the following.
All Canon EOS cameras have a red spot on the lens mount to denote the lens alignment for EF mount lenses, check to see if your camera has an additional white spot to denote the lens alignment for EF-S mount lenses, if it does, then this lens will fit.
Focal length
This lens has an actual focal length of 10-22mm, but because of the x1.6 crop ...
