The Canon EOS 1000D is an excellent entry level camera. I bought it in September 2008 for £384 with the 18-55mm lens and a £50 cashback from Canon themselves.
The picture quality is excellent with a basic range of settings that are excellent for beginners to learn the ropes of photography. The build quality and reliability of this Canon is very good and i have had no problems or faults with it what so ever. Battery life is also very good and you can easily have a day out without worry of your Canon dying on you.
For the price i feel it has all the functions you need to take excellent photographs and would definately recommend it to friends or family if looking to buy an entry level camera. The instruction booklet that comes included is also very user friendly and something you can learn alot from, especially if you are a beginner like myself.
