Now this is one serious bit of photography kit, a veritable Rolls Royce of digital cameras.
PC Pro, in a general article on the Cannon range in March 2003, said: “For the more serious amateur and professional photographers, Canon has also released the £1275 EOS 10D, which succeeds the EOS D60. A 6.4 million pixel digital SLR with a seven point wide area autofocus system, it is the first digital SLR camera to feature Direct Print capability. It can save images simultaneously in both RAW and JPEG formats, with a choice of six JPEG file sizes. It covers ISO 100-1600, adheres to the Adobe RGB Colour Space standard and can support large capacity Compact Flash memory cards of over 2Gb storage size.” I don’t know about you, but very little of that flash techie nonsense actually makes an awful lot of sense to me, so it’s as well to stick to the knitting of layman speak.
First of all, price …
A quick look around the Kelkoo site, demonstrates that the EOS 10D varies in price between £929 at 7dayshop.com right up to £1,224 at dabs.com, and that pricing range shows what sort of mark up the suppliers and distributors put on these beauties, but I guess if you can afford a grand for a digital camera, then a couple of hundred either way won’t make that much of a difference. Still, why should you pay £300 more for no great benefit?
The EOS 10D is worth every penny of whatever you pay for it (!!) because it’s the sort of machine where quality is everything.
It’s a big, chunky, relatively old fashioned black bit of hardware in a retro stylee which smacks of class … with a beefy resolution of some 6.5 megapixels, which is one of the highest specifications around in the affordable camera market, and it can generate really faithful photographic reproductions right up to an output of 13 by 9 inch prints, although it claims that 24 by 36 is also acceptable at a distance. However, if you want such mammoth canvases then you’re probably financially equipped to buy a more expensive machine. 13 by 9 is quite acceptable as far as I am concerned, and my own little foibles restrict me to viewing on PC screen rather than paper (even glossy) prints.
The EOS 10D is in many ways like the standard single lens reflex camera, and has many of the techie tricks which you’d normally associate with that sort of machine, “It has an optical viewfinder, a shutter, and a mirror. Its operating modes, autofocus, autoexposure, and main and quick control dials are derived from EOS film cameras. It feels very sturdy, thanks to the magnesium body.” (http://www.normankoren.com/EOS-10D.html for full details of an anorak’s view).
You have to pay extra if you want the optional AC charger for the optional rechargeable battery pack, and at about fifty quid, such extras soon start adding up to a BIG deal, especially when you need to buy a lens and a memory card, which are essential requirements, while you will also need to fork out for a card reader if you haven’t already got one.
In my case, as a not too keen amateur, I’d far sooner just opt for a reasonably comprehensive and complete package at more like four or five hundred quid, but I suppose the seasoned aspiring professional likes to buy bits and pieces to customise yer basic pack. Not me, but you can understand the attraction, a bit like buying hifi separates rather than a ready made midi system --- snob value reigns supreme…
The EOS 10D produces really sharp, high quality reproductions, but then what else would you expect at the price? However, these days you can get very acceptable photos at very minimal cost and I’m not sure that the price premium really pays off when buying this sort of machine, but what the hell do I know?
What I do know is that when you compare the EOS 10D to other cameras in the same class then it comes out feeling pretty bloody good, it’s just that I’m not sure that the improvement over yer bog standard item is worth double the price, but then I’m just a miserly old man.
Canon have built a strong reputation in the digital camera market, especially at the top end and the EOS 10D maintains that excellent rep, which is very well deserved. Price is a bit of a stinker, but big boys do love their expensive big toys. It’s just that it’s sometimes hard to convince the wife to let you splash…
Advantages: Ease of use, great pictures, good feel Disadvantages: Some non Canon lenses may cause errors, no eye-control focus
...weeks ago I owned a Canon EOS3 which I loved (and still do). I finally decided to take the plunge and go digital after using a digital compact for a few weeks. Canon was the obvious choice for me, since I already owned Canon fit lenses. I had been watching and waiting for the last couple of years, until digital seemed that it could rival film. This camera is the one that firmly puts the nail in the coffin for film!
If you are a Canon (or SLR) user, ... ...camera and go.
But....and this is a big but...make sure you read the manual in full, and learn as much as possible about digital imaging as possible.
Even though you can pick up the camera and take pictures immediately, this thing is not a toy! It is a complex piece of equipment, and to get the best out of it, you must learn all there is to know. For example, learn the differences between shooting in RAW, or JPEG. Learn about white balance, sharpening, ...

...thinking that this was another Canon EOS 35mm camera. AF is fast and the AI focus mode that tracks a subject is very accurate indeed. Being able to grab 9 shots in three seconds is also handy for those who like to shoot sports and nature where timing is of the essence.
My own area is in landscape photography, an acid test where digital cameras are concerned, and many have failed in my eyes. It all boils down to fine detail resolution, latitude, ... ...up large, the images from Canon EOS digitals always look more 'filmy' than their competitors. Perhaps it is the very restrained in-camera processing - no unsightly sharpening artefacts, no agressive noise reduction algorithms reducing the fine detail and textures captured. The end result is outstanding. Stand an A3 print from this next to an A3 print from a 35mm slide and you'd be hard pressed to spot the difference - except that the 10D would have ...

Advantages: Strong body - has taken a fair few knocks but never failed me. Disadvantages: Slow writes to CF card, visible pixel noise at 400 ASA.
Very robust and reliable camera. I've been using one from new and it has given great results. The autofocus has more difficulty finding focus than my old (film) EOS 5 models, but I've got used to that. The only lens it wouldn't accept from the ones I used with the EOS 5's was a Sigma wide-angle, but this is a known problem and Sigma will modify their lenses free of charge. Although its 6 MP is modest by today's standards, this camera has let me take ... ...arrival of an EOS 5D has now consigned the 10D to the role of backup body, but it still has its uses: unlike the new 5D it has a built-in pop-up flashgun enabling fill-in flash (I do not regard pop-up flashguns on an SLR to have any use as a primary flash), and the 1.6:1 effective magnification resulting from the smaller sensor is useful when coupled to a telephoto to give me a higher degree of magnification. ...

Advantages: Image quality, handling, value for money Disadvantages: Start up time
The Canon 10D is the third DSLR of the xxD line by Canon, which now contains 7 cameras. In my opinion the 10D is one of the best, for a number of reasons. The 6mp sensor allows prints to be made at A3 size or more, while reducing noise in the images. It also features a Magnesium Alloy body which feels very solid, and adds to the impression that this camera is more expensive than it actually is - it can be found very cheaply now from eBay or professional ... ...wide-angle lenses may find that they are not so wide when coupled with the 10D. To sum up, the Canon 10D is one of Canon's best DSLRs to date, with superb quality images and handling, only let down by small details such as a long startup time. A solid 9/10. ...

Advantages: Good build quality, excellent "feel", takes some non-digital EOS lenses Disadvantages: Very expensive, poor quality screen, some control switches are way too small
I have owned my 10D for 10 months and during that time I have used it in most conditions and for most types of photography. It is without doubt a robust and generally well built camera. However if like me, your decision to purchase is based on the fact that you can use all your old EOS lenses, you should note that not ALL EOS lenses do in fact work with this model (I think it would be best to take your existing lenses to the dealer and check yourself!) ... ...Once you have established which of your lenses DO work, you then have to take into account that because the 10D has a small sensor array the effective length of your lenses is multiplied by 1.6 (thus your favorite 28mm wide angle is now a not so useful 44.8mm! and your nice 300mm telephoto has magically become 480mm and can no longer be used hand held!...of course none of this applies to the purpose built cannon digital EOS lenses which are fabulous! ...

Advantages: zoom range, stabilisation Disadvantages: awkward when hand-held
I purchased a 100-400 IS L USM lens as my first long lens on a CanonEOS10D. Initial impressions - solidly built, heavy (as expected), pretty sharp images.
I used the lens for some months, mainly for bird photography. Carrying the lens attached to the 10D I found it a bit awkward and heavy. In use it was manageable hand-held but at the 400 end it was definitely in charge of the camera though this made it pretty easy to balance the camera until I became tired. I found that the auto focussing failed, rather than just being slower) if I hadn't set the focussing distance switch to the correct range (it determines whether to start searching very close to the camera or not).
You attach the lens to a tripod using the rotatable collar mount (I kept a tripod quick release plate permanently attached to the collar) and switch off the image ...
Advantages: lightweight, sharp images Disadvantages: doesn't say Canon on the outside
I first used one of these lenses on a Minolta 700si where it replaced the earlier 28-200 XR. I found the new lens gave really good results, better than the 28-200 XR. I replaced the 700si with a CanonEOS10D digital SLR in August 2003 and bought a Tamron 28-300 XR in the following December.
I again found the results really good, in macro mode the images are always sharp and I never need to use the unsharp mask in Photoshop. (I sold my Canon 28-135 IS USM lens because the Tamron gave the sharper images). At the full 300 end of the zoom I also find the images excellent. However, this is a compact lens so don't expect wonderful results using a teleconverter in low-light conditions (cameras like the CanonEOS 20D will still do a great job of auto-focusing but exposure time will be long).
The weight and balance of the lens suits the 10D ...
Advantages: Intuitive digital SLR with great results Disadvantages: Superceded by the Canon EOS 10D
Firstly a caveat. I love this camera. But if you are buying a digital SLR soon don't buy!! That's 'cos Canon have released the EOS10D which has better specifications and is £500 cheaper! (CanonD60 had a recommended price of £1999, the EOS10D should come in at £1499) - though you'll probably be able to get it at £1199 by shopping around on the internet)
I took a long time researching which digital SLR to buy. Much of my information came from www.dpreview.com which has a fantastically detailed review of the CanonD60 covering every single aspect of the camera. The website has great reviews of most digital cameras and has user forums also - very useful for deciding between cameras. www.imaging-resource.com also has a very detailed review.
I wish to limit my opinion on this camera to my experience of it as technical reviews are much ...

The EOS 10D's 6.3 megapixel Canon CMOS sensor delivers superbly detailed images, and 7-point high-speed AF allows precise focusing over a wide area.A powerful DIGIC (DIGital Imaging Core) processor optimizes color rendition. High speed processing means a continuous burst of 9 shots at 3 frames per second is possible. It also extends the camera's battery life. The EOS 10D can write RAW and JPEG files simultaneously, while there's a choice of 6 JPEG resolution settings. For enhanced exposure stability, the EOS 10D has a new evaluative metering system for both daylight and flash. As well as sRGB, the EOS 10D features Adobe RGB. This improves color rendition by capturing colors across an extremely wide spectrum. An ISO speed range from 100 - 1600 (3200 Extended HI accessible via the ISO expansion menu) offers extensive shooting flexibility whatever the lighting conditions.9 white balance modes are available Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Flash, Custom and Color Temperature. In Color Temperature mode, users manually select the warmth they require from the Kelvin scale (2800K to 10000K in 100K increments). With White Balance Bracketing, the EOS 10D automatically captures three bracketed shots (normal, reddish and bluish) with one release of the shutter. An Intelligent Orientation Sensor detects whether the camera is being held horizontally or vertically when shooting. This gives more accurate exposures. It also means easy viewing and editing, since shots appear the right way up on the LCD, in ZoomBrowser on the computer screen or on TV.The EOS 10D's LCD offers 5 levels of brightness. It can be brightened so it's easier to see or dimmed so it's less intrusive and saves power. The menu display offers the choice of 12 different languages. With a robust magnesium alloy body, the EOS 10D has outstanding durability and a distinctive presence. It features an ergonomic hand-grip which makes extended shooting very comfortable. The EOS 10D is the first digital EOS camera to feature Direct Print.
