The Canon EOS-1D Mark II N is a significantly improved version of its popular predecessor, the acclaimed EOS-1D Mark II. Numerous advances, including the 11 major improvements, raise functionality and performance to unparalleled new levels, empowering professional photographers to achieve their highest aspirations with greater ease. Canon's larger LCD monitor makes focusing easier to check. Displayed text is larger for easier reading, and the broader 170-degree viewing angle allows clear viewing from almost any vertical or horizontal angle. Easy-to-understand Picture Style replaces Processing Parameters and Color Matrix with 6 preset image style settings and 3 user-defined styles that bring common image characteristics to EOS DIGITAL cameras incorporating Picture Style. Canon refined image processing to achieve 8.5fps continuous shooting with 48 Large JPEG shots and 22 RAW shots per burst. The burst rate has even been improved at every image quality setting. Improved playback features include quick, near-pixel-equivalent magnification centered on the selected AF point, even right after shooting, and higher image quality during magnification. For greater convenience, the last displayed image now appears instead of the last recorded image when playback is stopped and resumed. The Info Display also includes more information. Both images and information are now larger and clearer on the higher quality LCD. Previous EOS-1D series models required you to stop recording and manually create a new folder whenever file No. 9999 was reached. Automatic New Folder Creation generates a new folder automatically and allows recording to begin from file No. 0001 without interruption. Users can also now define the first four alphanumeric characters of file names, on the camera, for more convenient file management. The newly developed Focusing Screen Ec-S with new Super Precision Matte makes it easy for professional photographers to determine the precise point of sharpest focus during manual focusing. This is because the microlens on the screen's matte is optimally shaped to increase defocusing near the point of focus. An "Auto" setting for long-exposure noise reduction only reduces noise when deemed effective, and several menu options are now accessible right after continuous shooting. ISO sensitivity is now displayed in the viewfinder, as well as the top LCD panel, allowing you to view the subject while adjusting ISO speed or ISO speed bracketing. This reduces the likelihood that a photo opportunity will be missed. Direct printing features include 35-up contact printing with photo number or date, Exif information printing on bordered single and 20-up prints, support for new paper sizes, and a Face Brightener printing effect. The enhancements include spot metering in the center of the image when the selectable AF points are limited to 9, support for the optional Focusing Screen Ec-S with Super Precision Matte, more frames per burst settings, and additional default settings when the clear button is pressed.

Advantages: Incredible Image quality, great look and feel, Disadvantages: Fairly bulky, but otherwise excellent
...The EOS-1DMarkII is Canon's answer to Nikon's D2H camera, however Canon have improved resolution and feature an extremely low noise functionality using the same technology as featured in the previous EOS1D.
Excellent image resolution and increased buffer size make this a highly worthwhile next step and if you're thinking of purchasing for the first time then this becomes a really desirable option.
SD slot and USB connector are interesting additions as they suggest potential add-ons and upgrades in the future. In all a good successor to the 1D with fantastic Image quality.
As I mentioned, on the down-side this feels a little bulky, but that may just be a personal thing - though both this and the original retain that cult Canon cool look that screams Pro....

Advantages: Very fast, rugged, completely professional Disadvantages: A bit outdated these days.
...I owned this camera for six months before replacing it with the updated EOS1D Mk II (Mark 2). It's a professional tool, very rugged, weatherproof with a mind boggling array of configuration options that lets you customise the camera to the Nth degree. Now a bit long in the tooth compared to newer models. However there are a lot of these floating around second hand and if you don't need the higher resolution of the newer models but need something that is ultra fast and extremely rugged that can handle any shooting situation then the 1D could be just what you're looking for. You'd also be buying into the EOS system, arguably the largest and most comprehensive range of lenses and other accessories available, all which will still work should you update your camera body to a newer CanonEOS body....

I decided to wait for 4 months after the purchase of this camera before reviewing it because I had coveted one for so long, that I thought there would be too much bias in my words if I wrote about it as soon as it was out of the box. It's taken a few... more
