I owned this camera for six months before replacing it with the updated EOS 1D Mk II (Mark 2). It's a professional tool, very rugged, weatherproof with a mind boggling array of configuration options that lets you customise the camera to the Nth degree. Now a bit long in the tooth compared to newer models. However there are a lot of these floating around second hand and if you don't need the higher resolution of the newer models but need something that is ultra fast and extremely rugged that can handle any shooting situation then the 1D could be just what you're looking for. You'd also be buying into the EOS system, arguably the largest and most comprehensive range of lenses and other accessories available, all which will still work should you update your camera body to a newer Canon EOS body.
Advantages: Very good Professional Camera Disadvantages: Currently very expensive int he UK - Cheaper in USD from the US.
...always dreamed about buying a Canon D1 because they are waterproof all over and are one of the best cameras you can get for a professional to work with. He currently works with a D30, which are sadly not waterproof, so you have to look after the camera in the rain.
At the moment they are very expensive in the UK, they can range from £2000 + but a great point to remember is that if you surf the internet you can buy them in US$ working out to be as ...

Advantages: Fast writing, low light/high ISO setting, huge screen, robust Disadvantages: Auto focussing
a bunch of firefighters doing breathing apparatus training in a basement in Southwark using the 3200 ISO setting and the Canon 70-200 mm F2.8L image stabilising lens. A lovely combination and the results are outstanding.
The down side - I didn't need to wait for the four months to realise that the autofocussing on this camera takes some getting used to. On occasions where I cover sporting events, I have found that despite playing with a number of different focussing modes on the 1D, I get better focussing accuracy when using the 20D and 5D models, both used by our team of wedding and event photographers.
I love the results I have created with this masterpiece at the top end of Canon's DSLR's. It's a heavy bit of kit, but the weight appears to be relative to the quality of build in digital photography. It's certainly appears to be ...
Advantages: Incredible Image quality, great look and feel, Disadvantages: Fairly bulky, but otherwise excellent
The EOS-1D Mark II is Canon's answer to Nikon's D2H camera, however Canon have improved resolution and feature an extremely low noise functionality using the same technology as featured in the previous EOS1D.
Excellent image resolution and increased buffer size make this a highly worthwhile next step and if you're thinking of purchasing for the first time then this becomes a really desirable option.
SD slot and USB connector are interesting additions as they suggest potential add-ons and upgrades in the future. In all a good successor to the 1D with fantastic Image quality.
As I mentioned, on the down-side this feels a little bulky, but that may just be a personal thing - though both this and the original retain that cult Canon cool look that screams Pro. ...
Advantages: Rugged, professional, fast Disadvantages: Expensive
The EOS1D Mk II is my fourth Canon digital SLR. I've owned the 300D, the 10D and 1D Mk I. It's important to note that you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference between pictures taken with this camera and the 300D, the 10D or the 20D. In 99% of situations the cameras would produce identical results. Every other camera that I've owned has let me down at some point, producing a rubbish image when I should have had a great shot. The focus hasn't been quick enough, or the metering hasn't been acurate enough. Not with the 1D Mark II. If I get a bad image, it's my fault. Metering is incredibly accurate, exposures are perfect. With decent lenses (and you wouldn't put rubbish glass on this camera) focussing is fast, very fast. It's always ready for the next shot, you never miss a thing. It's also environmentally sealed and you aren ...
Canon's flagship EOS-1D claims the position of the world's leading all-around professional digital camera. This unique camera has a continuous shooting speed of 8 frames per second in either Single Shot or AI Servo mode and can sustain this for 21 frame bursts. The high-resolution XL (eXtra Large) CCD uses 4.15 megapixels to create a true 11.7 MB file in a photographic 2: 3 aspect ratio. The combination of both speed and image quality makes the EOS-1D the most well-balanced professional camera available today. Professionals no longer need to sacrifice either the speed demanded by the F1 sports photographer, or the high-resolution required for studio shoots, for the EOS-1D offers both. Photographers can now enjoy a digital camera that incorporates the highest professional features acclaimed in the current award-winning EOS-1V. These include 45-point area auto focus, 21 zone metering, familiar EOS ergonomic layout and the camera's renowned toughness and durability.
