I compared this with the nikon d40x which is nikons equivilent of this camera. the 400d is a great entry dslr and takes excellent photos. however i would highly recommend upgrading to a better quality lens as the images produced are not quite sharp enough compared to the d40x kit lens and the auto focusing can be a bit loud. i would recommend either the nikon or the canon the 400d. is an excellent camera for the price and has more than enough features to occupy most photographers for years. one feature i find very useful is the integrated cleaning system built into the camera, every time you turn the camera on it vibrates the surface of the sensor to remove any dust particles, this is a lot safer and cheaper than having to buy an additional cleaning kit and a lot of new slr users may prefer this if they are not comfortable in doing it manually. The 2 inch lcd screen is a real luxory compared to older cameras such as the 350d which had 2 low resolution screens which made viewing settings and reviewing photos a lot less enjoyble. the 400d displays all your shooting info including shutter speed, iso and aperture etc on the lcd. all in all at this current time there is not another camera that performs as well as this and for a reasonable price. The build quility is somewhat average for a camera of this price but could be better as the nikon d40 and d40x both slightly cheaper than this have an overall better quality.
