The 50E is an old fashioned Single Lens Reflex camera (that's look through the lens to you and me) which has been around for 5+ years now.

It is know as the Rebel in the US and other countries but is basically the same.

The camera would be an excellent budget buy for a beginner, or a good second hand buy for those wanting a cheaper option or second camera.

It can come with a range of lenses - depends on package/store.
I bought this with a 35-80mm Canon USM lens and later bought a 35-300mm Tamron lens to enable all shots from one lens.

Reliability
-------------
Had this for years now with not a thing wrong. Excellent build despite plastic parts in some places.

Pictures
------------
Leave it on auto and 99% of all shots will be infocus and correctly exposed. It struggles with bright backgrounds on darker subjects so you have to learn to spot this and correct manually.

The pluses
---------------
Small enough to be useable by men and woman - some SLRs are heavy and too big for small hands but not this one.

Features - good range of speeds up to 1/2000 and adjustments easily accessed from buttons on the rear of the case.
The jewel is the 3 spot eye focusing feature. Basically you can set it to focus where you look. Neat and it really works.
More modern Canons have 7 or 9 focusing spots but this is enough for any amateur.

Exposure control can be left on a very competent automatic, or set to a variety of modes for portrait, landscape and action.

The unit has a built in power wind which can take about a picture every 0.5 seconds, so action photos are easy.

Canon lenses can be interchanged onto the next Canon SLR you buy (film or digital).

The minuses
------------------
Old tech now but should be reflected in the price. Best buy second hand.

Film - it suits me nicely with a portable digital camera along side it. The quality is better but still a hassle getting the films developed and printed.

Overall
----------
I cannot recommend Canon highly enough.
This camera was and is excellent.
