One of the most important accessories for each lens you own. A lens hood provides multiple functions: it shades the lens from stray light, improving your contrast and image quality; in inclement weather, it can assist in keeping moisture or wind-blown debris off the lens; and it protects the front barrel from the inevitable impacts against walls, door frames, and other real-life obstacles. This hood is compatible with EF 100 f/2.8 Macro USM lens. For a complete compatibility list please refer to the original manufacturer's web site.
...One of the cheaper of Canon's excellent 'L' series professional lenses, I bought this lens for a safari trip in South Africa. Twinned with a Canon 300D, it gave sufficient length for the price. It is also very solid, and coped with several hard knocks with no ill effects.
The lens is an EF mount, suitable for all Canon EOS cameras, including those that also accept the EF-S lenses. The lens itself is built to 'L' series standards, although it is not weather sealed. Despite this lack of weatherproofing, focussing and zooming do not cause any extension of the lens, so there is less chance of dust ingress.
The lens comes in a soft pouch, and comes with the ET-74 lenshood that is required. You will need to supply your own UV filter to protect the front element; here the lens takes a 67mm filter size, which is different from the 77mm...

Advantages: Improvement on the kit lens Disadvantages: Bigger and Heavier
...While the 18-55 kit lens that comes with the Canon 350D, 30D etc is a very good lens for the price, it is a little 'plasticky', and keen photographers are likely to want to trade up to something a little better.
The 17-85 IS lens is not the fastest lens in the world, but since it comes with Image Stabilisation, this is not a problem, as long as you're not hoping to stop action. The IS can feel a little spooky at first, as the image in the viewfinder lags as you move the camera, but you get used to it. The IS can get confused when the camera is on a tripod, but fortunately there is a switch allowing it to be switched off. You may also wish to switch it off when you're on an extended trip from base; the IS can be a drain on the camera battery.
The lens is well built, and feels solid. Focussing is very fast and accurate, while the full...

Advantages: Solid build, smooth operation and quality results Disadvantages: Less adapted for action photography
...on a Canon body.
Operation
Overall I found the lens easy and comfortable to use. As both zoom and focus operations are conducted internally, there's no possibility of the zoom changing accidentally. The zoom ring has a vibration free operation of roughly 70 degrees through the entire zoom range. This is measured in linear increments of 50, 70, 100 and 150mm. One handy feature of an HSM-style lens is that the autofocus can be overridden by simply adjusting the focus ring. It can also be disabled on the lens via a small switch. I found the operation of the manual focus ring to be nice and smooth. The lens takes 67mm filters and comes with a standard round lenshood. The filter ring is made of a hard plastic. One advantage when using filters is that they won't rotate during focusing or zooming. I did find the lenshood to be a little large...

Being my birthday the other day, my fiancée compensated me by buying me a Panasonic DG67, weighing in at a mid-range £99.99. I was so impressed with her choice that I decided to write a review on this featured-packed phone which, I think, represents... more
You cant really argue when someone offers you a camera for free can you? But when it has more megapixels and more optical zoom than the slightly older model you already have and does not perform as well, you do have to ask youself, is it all worth... more
