I've never been particularly interested in cameras usually because I cant use them properly, but when I got one of these as a birthday present I thought well I'll just have to give it a go. For me this is a marvellous little camera and I am sure it has lots to offer even for the expert. It is very light and compact with lots of great functions. The carry-case has a loop so you can attach it to your belt leaving your hands free, which is great for sight-seeing. The handbook is pretty good and explains eveything well.
The camera is very easy to use with plenty photo options including standard, wide and panoramic views, anti red eye (which actually works) and a facility for the date and time to show on your photos. You can also set the camera to print messages on your photos which is a clever novelty. But the best thing for me is the ease of loading and unloading the film. It just pushes in and slides out with no need to do anything but point and click. The lens cover is part of the camera and you cannot accidentally take a photo with it on because the shutter won't operate until the lens cover is open, the view finder is a bit small and I found I had to take my glasses off to see through it properly. Also the buttons are small and a bit fiddly especially for someone with sausage fingers; however a stylus is supplied to operate the buttons with. Another issue is that the flash stays on unless you specifically turn it of which might get you into trouble if flash is not allowed. Developing is quite expensive at £8 for 25 photos but I did get 2 free films and might have saved on cost by shopping around. Also the camera itself was a bit pricey at something like £65.
Overall I think the Canon IXUS M-1 is an excellent compact camera. It has enabled me for the first time ever to take good photos.

My apologies Eastmark, obviously as it's in the 35mm category it's a 35mm camera. I really should familiarise myself better with the site before i start flinging silly questions around. Alasdair

Thanks for the review which was pretty helpful, I'd like to have been able to tell from the review what type of film the camera takes, APS or standard roll?) perhaps APS is old hat now though and I'm just not up to date. I'd also like to have seen your own comments on the quality of the pictures, i know you rated ithis as excellent but it's nice to know why. Yes ....... I've been called pernickety at times.
