I recently got the chance to purchase a new printer for a friend of mine, he, having no internet access and wary of overpriced shops asked me to go online and find him a decent printer for under 150 pounds. Having only bought two printers prior to getting the Canon LBP 1120 I wasn't entirely sure where to start, to combat my uncertainty I decided to shop around, seeking the finest price possible.
In the end my search brought me back to my usual shop for components, www.ebuyer.com. After around ten minutes browsing their printer section I came across the LBP 1120 Laser printer. Canon in general
have always served me well, being one of the only firms to charge a fair price for ink cartridges, my first printer, an Epson I found I had to shell out 20 quid just for a cartridge! Such perks as a claimed ten pages a minute, plus some sort of Laser Shot technology feature finally convinced me to opt for this printer, it certainly looked rather nice too. The final price stood at just 109 pounds including VAT and delivery! Pretty cheap for a laser printer.
The Printer
As is always the case with ebuyer.com, the item arrived very promptly 4 days after placing my order. It came in a rather large, lightly coloured box with a picture of the printer on the front, plus a few details with regards to its Dpi rating and capabilities. Inside was the printer, plus its cable and a moderately sized booklet with information regarding installation and use, aswell as a software CD obviously containing Canon's printing software.
While moderately heavy, the printer isn't too much of a bother to life and carry to wherever you want it to be. In my case it was my friends desk. The cables provided make for a relatively easy installation process. The printer is packaged with a USB connection, not the traditional pinned connection we often see with other printers, one end fits in the printer, the other in a USB socket in the rear of ones computer.
The other cable is a traditional power cable, with a 3 pin connection one end and a UK plug on the other. Obviously one end fits into the printer and the other in a nearby plug socket.
Upon finishing installing the printer, I booted up Windows. The printer is compatable with Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP. Unfortunately the printer will not work with a MAC or a Linux system. My buddy is running on 98' so it was no problem whatsoever to install and run the software. The software provided is quite similar to what you'd find with another brand, say HP or Epson, with useful printing functions and options included. The printer itself looks rather nice and modern, with its curvacious front and paper holding mechanisms its a quintissential post millenium machine. The buttons are easy to operate, and its warm up cycle is very quick indeed, taking under a second! Meaning you could switch this on, and have a sheet printed off in under 20 seconds, not bad ey?
The printer runs from a Canon all in one cartridge, which according to them ensures little maintenance is necessary (until of course the ink runs out). This is particularily useful for the casual home user, as some printers can take some technical knowledge to work out, not this one though!
Paper feeds into the printer easily, we used normal plain paper for the testing, and ended up printing a set of 6 holiday photos from last summer, all of which came out brilliantly. The printing isn't instantanous, but its pretty darn close to it. It took between 15 and 20 seconds for each print, probably due to the amount of ink needed, this is outstanding considering an average inkjet can take several minutes just for one sheet! Aswell as this, the printer can also print on envelopes and labels, great if you mail items frequently to others or if your running a small business.
The printer is simple to operate, with again encourages me to emphasize the usefulness within the home or workplace. It really is a convenient piece of technology. Its also completely silent, possessing no noisy fan!
Manufacturers support is good too, Canon's website includes a good library of drivers for the printer, ensuring it will run with any future version of Windows perfectly. Three weeks on my mate is very happy with his new printer, and in case anything should go wrong, the printer is covered by a 12 month warranty courtesy of Canon!
Conclusion
This is a truly amazing printer, not too expensive at a tad over 100 quid, and delivers an awesome service, printing out even photo shots very fast indeed. Thus, I definately recommend this product to anyone looking for a new printer for their home or small business.
